And sometimes you hit the one in a million: when a cord your partner kept from old pants of his perfectly fit into your pants where the cord got torn.

All my projects are casted in reclaimed and recycled foam found in my neighborhood in Thailand. From discarded packaging to dumped ice boxes in nature, usable foam planks and blocs are cut. This helps cleaning up the environment and no new produced foam is necessary for my projects.
About #GPL .
If I buy a second-hand device with #Linux on it, who's responsible for giving me the sources?
It seems logical to me that the person I bought it from. But good luck getting sources from a private rando ( #sustainability #reuse ).
On the other hand, my #ISP sells me, say a #Huawei device. Is the ISP obliged to give me sources or can they say "it's not our problem" and send me to the manufacturer?
Great column in the local paper by Jennifer Brooks. Photos by Richard Tsong-Taatarii/The Minnesota Star Tribune.
Promoting repair and reuse in Minnesota.
“That’s what I find so exciting,” said Emily Barker, executive director of Reuse Minnesota. “There really is a place for everyone in the reuse conversation. Do they like mending? Do they like tinkering? Do they like thrifting? Do they like donating things and help other people find things?”
The thrifty generations that came before might have known how to sew a button, pickle a cucumber and change their own oil. Those skills didn’t necessarily make it down to us. Mend-it clinics are there to offer a hand — or a lesson.

Seeing how reviving old PCs is a hugely important thing to use Linux for, it's really strange to me how difficult it is to find out which distros works best on old hardware!
People say many things, but it's hard to find real benchmarks. Tried Lubuntu and Zorin Core on one laptop I have here, and it was not OK. AntiX seems fast enough, but unfortunately too nerdy to give to a non-nerd.
Very interesting results of #AAAS survey on researcher positions on #OpenLicenses. Note that I'm over 70.
https://www.aaas.org/news/interests-concerns-and-knowledge-gaps-around-open-licenses
<blockquote>
* 42% of respondents — when asked what they prefer to do with #CCBY licensed content where they use it themselves— mentioned actions that don’t necessarily require this license, like reading work, or sharing it in the classroom.
* 29% of respondents say there should be no limitations on the #reuse of peer-reviewed research at all, with those older than 70 years of age feeling most strongly.
* 28% of respondents were concerned about reuses of work with a CC-BY license, largely related to possible misrepresentations of their work. Some cited concerns about misuse of their data for political gain.
* In general, younger researchers were slightly more concerned than their older counterparts about potential downstream misuses of their work.
* With respect to commercial reuses of published work, about 36% indicated that there are cases that excite them, while roughly 63% indicated that there are cases that worry them. The latter group’s concerns relate to the possibility of misrepresentation by media and other groups or individuals; use by unsanctioned entities seeking to make a profit; and training of #AI models without proper attribution.

#Introduction
I've been on Mastodon for quite some time now, but under another name. I started a new account because I decided to take a step back from world news, collapse, climate change, hunger, war, fascism and inequality.
In short less doom and gloom and a little bit of positive small scale projects that might also inspire or help others.
With this account I'll focus more on my day to day life, the things I do and make.
Of course I sometime still will post concerning subjects that provoke my rage or frustration. Sorry, it's not all moonshine and roses.
Having said that, I've a broad range of subjects that have my interest, so hopefully something useful will stick with you.
From my profile text:
#Collapse aware person, born @ 320 ppm CO2, world population 3.1 billion.
Fighting depression and #sadness by doing some positive and small scale things that might help people.
Too many interests, like:

I've had my HP Laserjet 4050 for quite a while now. I scored it for free from an office supply store at around 2002 as faulty, with a note saying "screen shows stars, does not start". I quickly carried it away, knowing perfectly well how this thing looks like when it boots.
It takes around 30 seconds for them to come up from cold start, during which the display shows stars for 20 seconds, after its OS takes over and it starts showing what it does.
I see the manufacture date on this one is 4th of February 2000, so it's 25 years old and still runs perfectly. Thanks to it being a PostScript native device, even the current OSes, up to latest mobile devices print with it just fine.
Thinking about this thing's age I realised it's older than my friend's son, who got his driver's license last year!
"Making sense of software #licensing with @fsfe #REUSE: A beginner’s guide for #OpenSource developers" (article in the @fedora magazine):
My portable power station (li-ion #battery with built in inverter) has stopped charging, opening it up carefully it's not clear what's wrong but it's not the sort of thing you really want to mess with. It's quite old AllWinner model (so not a particularly good brand).
Therefore I've got 288Wh of li-ion 3.7v cells, I'm thinking of looking for a new BMS as feels a waste to just not use, any ideas/thoughts from the fediverse
Dzisiaj w wiejskiej naprawialni zagościł ThinkPad X1 Yoga 3 generacji. Umarła bateria RTC (Real time clock).
Wychodzi sporo taniej
Na Amazonie $10, w sklepie "nieoryginalna" 5-10zł.
Jeśli macie potrzebę naprawy laptopa, to wiejska naprawialnia #Polesie poleca się Można przysłać sprzęt (po uzgodnieniu) do paczkomatu, po naprawie zostanie odesłany.
Naprawiaj, nie wyrzucaj!
@podfeet @spsheridan This is great. Two heads are better than one. #Repair #ReUse
A reminder. Recycling should be what we do when we’ve tried all these other options. #ClimateAction #Reduce #ReUse #Recycle #Climate
You Need Much Less #Memory than #Time
“Just as I was complaining that we haven't seen many surprising breakthroughs in complexity recently, we get an earthquake of a result to start the year, showing that all #algorithms can be simulated using considerable less memory than the time of the original algorithm. You can #reuse space (#memory) but you can't reuse time, and this new result from #RyanWilliams in an upcoming #STOC paper provides the first stark difference”

Dzisiaj w wiejskiej naprawialni zagościł router dostępowy LTE - ZTE WF830.
Padło zewnętrzne ODU (outdoor unit). W środku modem LTE i układ zintegrowany LG.
Tak wygląda antena MIMO na płytce drukowanej
Ożywion, wróci do pracy dostarczając internet gdzieś na poleskiej wsi.
Naprawiajcie, nie wyrzucajcie. Jak nie potraficie sami, dajcie zarobić serwisowi. Szkoda produkować śmieci, gdy urządzenia są naprawialne!
W wiejskiej naprawialni #DIY dzisiaj taki mały poboczny projekt. Jak z baterii do elektronarzędzi zasilić coś czy podładować przez USB?
Tutaj przetworniczka step-down 6-24V do 5V 3A USB.
Konektor do Stanleya FatMax niebawem przyjedzie (wydruk 3D). Na razie na goldpinach
Jeszcze muszę rozkminić jak zrobić, by nie wyssało aku do końca.
W wiejskiej naprawialni dzisiaj #RetroMTB polski #Unibike Trawers. Ma swoje lata, ale głównie stał w stodole więc "prawie nówka". Opony to Kenda, ale jeszcze Made in Taiwan. Niestety, czas się z nimi obszedł tak, że trochę się rozłażą już. W ogóle większość elementów jest z Tajwanu lub z Unii. Piękna maszyna. Klasyk retro, oryginał
Testowałem też "szczotkę" do mycia łańcucha bez ściągania.
Nie wierzyłem za bardzo w takie patenty, ale kurcze - to działa
