Letzte Woche der alten Firmenhardware in Form eines Toshiba Satellite Pro Notebook neues Leben mit Ubuntu 24.04 LTS eingehaucht.
#linux #UbuntuLTS @ubuntu
P.S.: ist dann doch kein Mint geworden, @jamrt
Unsolicited Ubuntu Studio 22 and any version of Ubuntu 22 LTS advice (long)
@SweetAIBelle Needless to say I've to dig deeper at the #OEM #Installer mode at @ubuntu / #UbuntuLTS #Desktop and how to setup a System so it'll retroactively encrypt at least $HOME
with #LUKS...
Alas I should look at my own #postinstall tool and get it up to snuff...
@SweetAIBelle very nifty...
Ideally with some nifty tools (compareable to Tails' #PersistentSotrage) to allow mounting local/remote storage as $HOME
and potentially leverage toram
as boot option.
Certainly that "#RescueLinux" part is mid- to ongterm goal of OS/1337 and I am working on it (abeit at a pace slower than I want to cuz 'things happen in meatspace' and those sadly require my full attention...
Using #ArchLinux is quite good because it makes it easy to get started and adapt said system as need be.
@SecurityWriter there are alternatives: #Linux (espechally #UbuntuLTS).
Trust me, I wasted 15 years trying to maie #Windows work and I went through allcthe stages of grief to come to terms with it.
@dthacker9 @ai6yr @fuchsiii it's very cheap #upcycling based off me having some spares lying around, and those hp t620 barely sip 2W TDP / 10W total even if you benchmark them.
Plus they are #fanless and have USB 3.0 ports, so ample of resources to run a P H A T Srrver distro luke #UbuntuLTS....
@topher #Linux distros like #UbuntuLTS and #Tails are easier to use than trying.to get #Windows11 in a useable state.
@SitaDulip AFAIK @ubuntu / #UbuntuLTS Server should launch an #SSH Server to access it's installer at boot.
Basically you modify the #CloudInit configuration file.
Same can be done with Debian.
Either way, you'd setup a minimalist system as a bootable image you can #SSH into and yoink that onto the target system to boot.
dd
the virtual HDD into an image you can then dd
onto the target machine.If time isn't critical, any halfway decent flashdrive will do, otherwise a 2,5" SSD (in a USB Caddy) is an option as well...
@ravirockks OFC they don't.
At best they show people how to change fan curves in the #UEFI or hiw to run #memtest86+, but mostly they just "teach" people how to consume #Windows and at best #macOS and that's it.
Same with @libreoffice / #LibreOffice & @thunderbird / #Thunderbird.
Ostatnio (używam LTS, więc to ostatnio to mogło być kilka lat temu) chyba zrobili jakąś aktualizację intel_gpu_top, bo nareszcie program pokazuje jakie konkretnie aplikacje używają akceleracji sprzętowej. Wcześniej pokazywało tylko ogólne zużycie (ta górna część), a teraz wygląda to bardzo fajnie. Nareszcie można zweryfikować, czy włączenie w jakiejś aplikacji akceleracji sprzętowej działa.

@mdhughes that's a big misconception because unlike #Windows, good #Linux distros, like #UbuntuLTS just work.
@meshuggahmischell also #ChromeOSflex gibt's als #ChromeOS zum selbstinstallieren.
RaspberryPi OS, Rant (swearing, well deserved)
dies wird also das schicksalhafte wochenende, an dem ich ein #ubuntults upgrade versuchen werde...
@Elucidating that's still #AssholeLicensing.
Compared to @ubuntu which when I asked them via eMail [years ago] about #preinstalling #UbuntuLTS went like:
'Shure you can do that and sell the systems and provide commercial support as an MSP. Just make shure you don't claim to be affiliated or endorsed by us and follow our trademark guidelines.'
And I'm shure if I were in the business of offering managed #Zulip Servers for customers, I'm shure @zulip wouldn't mind that as long as either stick to the #FLOSS'd version or appropriately license that for customers and not claim to be endorsed or affiliated with Zulip....
@Elucidating because they chose asshole licenses...
@zulip for example actually does provide added value with their #Business & #Enterprise plans without knee-jerking everyone who uses #Zulip and wants to #SelfHost it...

Similarly, @ubuntu do add value wuth #UbuntuPro and #Lifepatch for #UbuntuLTS and if I don't want or need those features, I can just install regular #Ubuntu LTS and still get a working OS...
