@topher the problem is the #Enshittifiaction and #Enfattening of #Websites and #Applications!

Seriously, I think that #Microsoft should be sued into insolvency for the way they create 100% avoidable #eWaste with #CensorBoot and #Windows11 to the point that if I didn't have my current job, I'd basically collect all the old machines from companies that are stupid enough to use #Windows [and they'll likely give them away for free minus SSDs / HDDs instead of paying €5+ for #recycling], shove some #Linux on [i.e. #RaspberryPiOS, #BunsenLabsLinux or #UbuntuLTS] and sell those off as used electronics for a good profit.

@SweetAIBelle Needless to say I've to dig deeper at the #OEM #Installer mode at @ubuntu / #UbuntuLTS #Desktop and how to setup a System so it'll retroactively encrypt at least $HOME with #LUKS...

Alas I should look at my own #postinstall tool and get it up to snuff...

  • I just wished I'd be paid to do my projects full time, cuz that would really kill the anxiety and frustration and provide the necessary stability to do so.

@SweetAIBelle very nifty...

Ideally with some nifty tools (compareable to Tails' #PersistentSotrage) to allow mounting local/remote storage as $HOME and potentially leverage toram as boot option.

Certainly that "#RescueLinux" part is mid- to ongterm goal of OS/1337 and I am working on it (abeit at a pace slower than I want to cuz 'things happen in meatspace' and those sadly require my full attention...

  • Needless to say it's always good to have a nifty system at hand (worst-case I'd install @ubuntu / #UbuntuLTS #Desktop on an external SSD/HDD and have that at hand) if one doesn't have their Distro on a hot-swappable / toolless replaceable drive anyway...

Using #ArchLinux is quite good because it makes it easy to get started and adapt said system as need be.

@SitaDulip AFAIK @ubuntu / #UbuntuLTS Server should launch an #SSH Server to access it's installer at boot.

Either way, you'd setup a minimalist system as a bootable image you can #SSH into and yoink that onto the target system to boot.

  • Another option is to basically setup the system in a #VM and then dd the virtual HDD into an image you can then dd onto the target machine.

If time isn't critical, any halfway decent flashdrive will do, otherwise a 2,5" SSD (in a USB Caddy) is an option as well...

@ravirockks OFC they don't.

At best they show people how to change fan curves in the #UEFI or hiw to run #memtest86+, but mostly they just "teach" people how to consume #Windows and at best #macOS and that's it.

Same with @libreoffice / #LibreOffice & @thunderbird / #Thunderbird.

Ostatnio (używam LTS, więc to ostatnio to mogło być kilka lat temu) chyba zrobili jakąś aktualizację intel_gpu_top, bo nareszcie program pokazuje jakie konkretnie aplikacje używają akceleracji sprzętowej. Wcześniej pokazywało tylko ogólne zużycie (ta górna część), a teraz wygląda to bardzo fajnie. Nareszcie można zweryfikować, czy włączenie w jakiejś aplikacji akceleracji sprzętowej działa.

@Elucidating that's still #AssholeLicensing.

Compared to @ubuntu which when I asked them via eMail [years ago] about #preinstalling #UbuntuLTS went like:

'Shure you can do that and sell the systems and provide commercial support as an MSP. Just make shure you don't claim to be affiliated or endorsed by us and follow our trademark guidelines.'

And I'm shure if I were in the business of offering managed #Zulip Servers for customers, I'm shure @zulip wouldn't mind that as long as either stick to the #FLOSS'd version or appropriately license that for customers and not claim to be endorsed or affiliated with Zulip....

@Elucidating because they chose asshole licenses...

@zulip for example actually does provide added value with their #Business & #Enterprise plans without knee-jerking everyone who uses #Zulip and wants to #SelfHost it...

Similarly, @ubuntu do add value wuth #UbuntuPro and #Lifepatch for #UbuntuLTS and if I don't want or need those features, I can just install regular #Ubuntu LTS and still get a working OS...
