Insecure defaults can lead to surprises. When creating FIFO sockets with systemd, be sure to note that SocketMode defaults to 0666 - that is world readable and writable. That is: any local user can communicate with the FIFO. If your FIFO is used to perform privileged operations you must ensure that either the FIFO file itself is located in secured location or set SocketMode to stricter value.
I spotted one such insecure use in cloud-init: the hotplug FIFO was world writable. This is CVE-2024-11584 and fixed in cloud-init 25.1.3.
The commit fixing this is in https://github.com/canonical/cloud-init/pull/6265

Leveling up Ubuntu for Developers: .NET Edition
Following on from our post about Java toolchains on Ubuntu, today the Ubuntu Foundations Director, Matthieu Clemenceau posted a new blog outlining the work his team have done on enabling .NET developers in #Ubuntu.
Take a look for details on how to use .NET in snaps, in teeny-tiny "Chiseled" container, and how to get access to preview .NET builds on Ubuntu!
Since 1990s with #Slackware, booting from 3 1/2 floppy. I messed up X11 config and almost lost my graphics card.
Then went to mandrake, conectiva, debian and I'm now an #ubuntu user. However, I'm getting tired of the snap package thing so I'm thinking of moving again.

Rescued an old desktop which had been decomissioned as too slow and laggy for Windows even with 8GB RAM
Now running #linux_mint - I tried the #Debian edition but it was still a bit laggy with Cinnamon DE and also managed to hose its CUPS configuration immediately after the first update.
Had better luck with the #Ubuntu based edition (even though I didn't want to use Ubuntu as much) and it runs XFCE desktop very fast.
Even the printer still works! This might go in the next office as a backup PC, if they don't want it I will probably take it home with me and use it there..
I use #Linux #distros since 2001
#Conectiva (until its extinction)
#Kurumin (for a short time)
#Xubuntu (first versions)
#Ubuntu (old #GNOME era, for a short time)
#LinuxMint with #XFCE (until now)

She's very much non-technical, so a command-line shell interface is going to be a non-starter.
We're not looking for medical solutions (she's in conversation with the medics, and has drugs that aren't helping a lot).
Question for anyone out there on fedi with experience:
My mum has increasingly bad ataxia: very wobbly hands and feet. She's got to the point of barely being able to write legibly. Using a mouse is also getting difficult, but she can still use a keyboard at this point.
Are there assistive technologies or techniques that she might be able to use on her Ubuntu machine that would reduce or eliminate the need to use a mouse?
