"New technologies, when introduced, are typically given names that overstate their capabilities, usually by equating them with existing familiar systems or technological artefacts. For example the first computers in the 1940s and 1950s, often little more than glorified electric adding machines, were nevertheless described as “electronic brains”. More recently, large language models (LLMs) have been touted as “artificial intelligence”, and complex physics experiments have been touted as “quantum computers”. In order to avoid any confusion with actual computers like the VIC-20 with which they have nothing in common, we refer to them here as “physics experiments”."

Das FederversumMarcel Waldvogel (@marcel@waldvogel.family)Earlier this week, Peter Gutmann and @sten@chaos.social published a bombshell paper: The looked at all the reported factorization "breakthroughs" in quantum computing. And found that all of them essentially were magician's tricks, "sleight of hand". The two reconstructed the algorithms used on a 1981 home computer (a million times less powerful than what you hold in your hand now), an #Abacus and with a #dog. #VIC20 #VC20 https://eprint.iacr.org/2025/1237

IACR Cryptology ePrint Archive · Replication of Quantum Factorisation Records with an 8-bit Home Computer, an Abacus, and a DogThis paper presents implementations that match and, where possible, exceed current quantum factorisation records using a VIC-20 8-bit home computer from 1981, an abacus, and a dog. We hope that this work will inspire future efforts to match any further quantum factorisation records, should they arise.

Question for the #VIC20 savvy human beings: can I just desolder the TIP29 transistor from one of my C64 spares boards and use it to replace Q4 on the VIC-20 (originally an 2SD880)? I believe they originally used the 2SD880 on the C64, too? (Too tired to dig out another C64 board to have a look currently…)

Nie pisalem o tym juz wczoraj wieczorem bo bylo za pozno, a ten news powinien sie rozniesc bardzo, bardzo szeroko.

Rewolucja w swiecie komputerow i gamingu! Prawdziwa rewolucja, nie zaden clickbait.

Pamietacie jak pisalem o planach Christiana "" Simpsona odnosnie marki ?

ZROBIL TO! Podpisal umowe z obecnymi wlascicielami praw do marki by ja na nowo ozywic... jeszcze raz:

Na koniec filmu Christian wspomina o tym, kogo jeszcze szukaja - tworcow merchu, artystow, managerow social media, posiadaczy licencji do klasycznych gier z lat 90 i tworcow gier indie.

Wspomina tez o tajemniczym "produkcie startowym", ale o nim ma byc wiecej w kolejnym odcinku... Czyzby C65 albo 129 albo 256? ;)
