Commodore Corporation sold to YouTuber “Perifractic” (RetroRecipes)
Some ordinary YouTube guy is now the CEO of the Commodore Corporation, which (I believe) makes him the owner of all Commodore “intellectual property” including brand logos and the hardware (SID chip, case designs for the Commodore 64 and Amiga, etc). I was surprised to learn the corporation still even existed, and I am not sure how really, probably as some dormant property of a private equity firm or something.
It is still a for-profit company, but now it run by the active stewardship of the leader of a retro computing community of techies who genuinely care about the products which that company produced, not so much as a brand, but as the avatar of a beloved, nostalgic childhood experience. I hope Perifractic makes the organization of the company more collective than hierarchical, but we’ll see.
And this Perifractic fellow is talking about raising the money he owes not just from angel investors, but also by creating a new Commodore product line (probably still using the old chips though) and selling to the rather sizable retro computing community.
I have a rule against sharing YouTube videos, but I am making an exception for this one. https://youtu.be/ke-Ao-CpI7E
