My #meshtastic #bbs is still up and running after all these months. I built the #server from scratch using a #raspberrypi and a Wizblock and I'm using a Spec 5 Nomad Meshtastic #computer as the terminal for it. Anyone within range of the BBS can have free #email and #bulletin board services by sending a direct message from their Meshtastic #radio . I recommend picking up a Meshtastic radio because censoring the #internet is part of #Project2025

Spring-cleaning at @Wintermute_BBS continues!

I've replaced the rather dull #ANSI menus I once designed in a hurry and without any creative idea (I never liked those) with some "new old stock".

See, there were several ANSI screens I had designed many years ago but for various reasons did not put into use even though I liked the way they turned out (mind you, I'm not a real ANSI artist)

So now I put some effort into making them fit with #MBSEBBS so that you people can enjoy them.

The screenshot of the message area menu is a just a little teaser, there are many more screens but I'm not going to spoil the fun ...

... and of course, I've preserved the iconic "red pin" ...

If anyone is wondering how I'm doing with my foray into #meshtastic, it is going great. I own four Meshtastic devices. Two of the devices are Meshtastic #computers and one of those computers is built entirely from scratch. I use it to run a #BBS server to provide free off-grid #email and bulletin board services for my community. I believe quite strongly that this #technology has the potential to help save us from #tech #oligarchs

It’s a long weekend. Your #Atari 8-bit is ready to use. #Fujinet is connected, BobTerm is loaded up, and you call #SouthernAmis #BBS to relive the days of message bases, downloading warez, and connecting with other Atari A8 enthusiasts.

This is an advertisement to get you back on a BBS

addendum: I've found something more or less useful to do with the aforementioned setup. I'm still trying to iron out a few things, but it's amazing what a little overclocking can do.

I'm quite impressed at how reponsive #NetBSD on the #RapberryPi Model 1 B (without the "plus" but with 512MB RAM - it's a rather early board manufacured in 12/2011).

So I decided to run #MagickaBBS on it, simply because it was the only #BBS software that I was able to compile on NetBSD - most other bulletinboardsystem software will not compile on #NetBSD (evbarm platform) for one or another reason - what a shame.

Anyway, about five years ago, I've had quite a creative burst and designed several #ANSI screens that I've never put into use. But this seems to be the right time to finally change that.

Stay tuned or follow: #netbsdonoldpi (NetBSD on old Pi) - I'll try to provide further updates in case you are interested ...

Back in the day when 40 column displays were common on microcomputers, was email and newsgroup participation with 80 column systems awkward? Be that FidoNet and Echomail or the real ARPANET / Internet if (somehow) available.

By the time I was connecting to BBS systems I had access to an 80 column machine, so I don't personally recall.

Hacker and free speech advocate Retro Guy has passed away.

I have been away from the Internet for at least a couple months. I came to quickly check my feeds and I am sad to have found report of the passing away of a very cool hacker, Thom Miller, known by the handle, Retro Guy. According to his wife Kaylen Miller, Thom died about two weeks ago from pancreatic cancer. He had a years-long struggle with cancer and multiple therapies and surgeries. During all the time of his illness he continued to hack away providing network access and software updates absolutely free to his user base. He was a strong believer in the value of open and decentralized communication for all. His software is simple and awesome, and useful for censorship-resistant communication. (https://gitlab.com/rslight-public/rocksolid-light)

Thom, known as Retro Guy, created the Rocksolid Light NNTP forums and server software. He served the hacker community as a free speech advocate and provider of free speech communication networking. He refused to censor opinions that he found offensive or stupid on the principle of the golden rule. He endured a lot of annoyances to provide service for many. Thom maintained the software for years giving web-based NNTP access to countless users. Thom was always helpful and patient with users needing assistance, even when he was feeling ill and suffering. He pushed through his pain to serve others with something he believed was a necessary tool and blessing for the general public.

I am sad to learn of Thom's passing. He will be missed and remembered. I will remember him by continuing to run his software.
