#xfce4 has a super-cool and accessible feature that helped me many times and I absolutely adore it. It is bound to Left-Alt+Pointer-Scroll and it zooms the visible output on the screen, so that it is possible to verify whether something is pixel perfect or not without any hassle.

Hello #freebsd users, I'm facing a very odd problem on my freebsd 14 desktop running #Xfce4 : randomly the desktop will become unresponsive for up to few minutes, often the mouse cursor is fully responsive but nothing else will move. Sometimes even the cursor is stuck.
It does not seem to be heat-related even though temp of CPU, GPU and storage rise a lot : I've used a browser benchmark to load the GUI, I've got record-breacking temps but GUI remained fully responsive.
I'm a bit lost, I don't know where to look next.
What system metrics should I track ? What tests could I try, taking into account I can't switch OS, nor shut down or reboot too often as this freebsd PC is my internet gateway too.

I had a very silly problem running my #i3wm (resolved now) and had to try some other window/desktop managers for a day.
I've tried #xfce4 and #kde6. I'm impressed how mature and polished the KDE was, although running a bit slow at times. xfce is lean ans sleek, much less complex without feeling being incomplete.
My hackish, fully keyboard driven #i3wm and #kitty terminals setup looks like it was made in a shed of sticks and zip ties. However, its ergonomics and how it fits to me is unrivaled, its speed and responsiveness are top-notch and it feels so good getting back to it. I've kept Thunar, will use it from time to time instead of #mc and #zsh.

@hairylarry I am posting from a laptop running #Debian sid with #Xfce4 right now. This is the laptop I use for work stuff everyday. I am just feeling bored after many years with #Linux and trying new things out lately with another ancient poorly-speced laptop nobody is using. Anyway, #BSD systems are fun!

today has been the first time in roughly a decade that I've installed #GNOME which I did to test how well it works with #Wayland on my setup. And although it's quite a different and very new experience for me as a long time #Xfce4 user, I think it's not as bad as I thought ... it feels less loaded then (dare I say it?!) Plasma, for example. Of course, this is just my humble opinion.

As for Wayland, it just works with my #RX580 which is very good to know.

Oh, and speaking of Xfce4 - I tried that with Wayland as well and it works, but there are still a few things left to be done, e.g. the mouse and keyobard setup didn't work (no setup dialog showed up) and there was no desktop background being shown, despite having selected a default image.

Fuck tumblerd. There is a nonzero number of times I've had to issue `killall tumberld` just to keep my disk activity high enough to do the job in sufficient time, because tumblerd is written for flash media, not spinning disks. Give me my iowait back, you fucking bastards.

A day of testing FreeBSD as a potential daily driver.

Spoiler alert: I don't think I'm confident about a complete switch. Those who know me know I'm slow as hell, and it'll take time. But running a day under FreeBSD proves that it's possible for my workloads. And the first step has been done.

#xfce 4.20pre1 appears to be official now. They are asking for help testing! I’ll need to find some time this weekend to check it out. Can’t say I’d make any package repos, but maybe. We’ll see how it goes. Might be a good time to play with my #crux #xfce4 repo and see where I can get things. (Though I’ve put crux things on the back-burner) I really need to dedicate some time to my ports.
