A little known part of computer history: The East German computer Robotron PC1715, the workhorse of East German IT landscape, was extensivly used in Chernobyl, for instance the radioactivity monitoring system after the accident of 1986. Likely it was because this computers was used in an ominous research facility nearby the power plant before the accident and it was quickly available, including the interfaces and sensors. To this day it's unclear what this facility was doing and there are still some unexplained artifacts in the basement, like the "grey sand". There are debates in Reddit for years what it actually was, but no explaination makes really sense, yet.

Das #Rechenwerk in #Halle braucht mal einen kleinen Gefallen: Wir haben da eine #Robotron K1840 stehen, ein #VAX 11/780 Nachbau.
Uns fehlt eine seltene Platine um den Rechner starten zu können.
Wir haben einen Händler in den USA ausfindig machen können, der die benötigte Platine hat, sie aber nicht auf dem Postweg nach Deutschland versenden kann.
Wir brauchen nun eine Person, die für uns die Platine mal bei passender Gelegenheit mit nach Deutschland bringt.

The Robotron A5120 is a historic East German computer produced in the 1980s by VEB Robotron. 
You might recall spotting it in the thrilling #deutschland83 TV series. 
Luckily I tested the equipment again. Of course the planned green CRT monitor not longer works. So this is now the #Robotron #Z1013 setup which I am taking with me to Paderborn in mid-April.

That's really funny! I looked up the recommened value of the transformer (12V AC) for the #Robotron #Z1013 in the manual. Up to 20W, means 1,66A. I measured the board without any extensions with 38mA at 12V. Seems like they put a “bit” of buffer in there. Maybe for short circuits.
