The ‘3.5% rule’ discovered by Erica Chenoweth is really interesting.
Also the number of demonstrators in the former #GDR, who in 1989 ultimately contributed to the peaceful overthrow of the system in #EastGermany, was nearly 3.5%.

@m If (as looks quite likely) Germany again splits, with the northeast going back under the skirts of Mother Russia, it would be unsurprising, given the colonial takeover that was reunification. Knew someone working in the East at the time, and she said abortion stopped immediately, all the eastern women's magazines were shut down, etc; also things like the school programmes which taught vegetable-growing and used the crops for lunches were immediately ended. there is a significant difference in approval of #farright #afd between #eastgermany and #westgermany; this went so far as that afd was leading only but in every former #gdr state

I have just found this fascinating report of a bicycle tour in the old East Germany just as the changes were starting to bite - it was written in June 1990 (note that the translation isn't great in places but it's perfectly readable).
Worth a read for anyone with an interest in German or 20th Century history.

A little known part of computer history: The East German computer Robotron PC1715, the workhorse of East German IT landscape, was extensivly used in Chernobyl, for instance the radioactivity monitoring system after the accident of 1986. Likely it was because this computers was used in an ominous research facility nearby the power plant before the accident and it was quickly available, including the interfaces and sensors. To this day it's unclear what this facility was doing and there are still some unexplained artifacts in the basement, like the "grey sand". There are debates in Reddit for years what it actually was, but no explaination makes really sense, yet.

Happy Birthday Villa Felix!
The 35th anniversary of the squatting of Schreinerstraße 47 in #Berlin-#Friedrichshain was the #occasion for artists to paint the façade together with the residents. The residents decided on the central content and image motifs. The picture of social utopias reflects the various topics they deal with within their housing project: in addition to the practical appropriation of living space, for example, #feminism and #climatejustice. The final design was created after several open meetings over the summer, at which sketches and ideas were compiled.
#Schreiner47 was initially occupied on 29 December 1989 by a dozen people who knew each other from the non-conformist #opposition movement in the #GDR or were active in the #Kirche von Unten, among others. One of them was #SilvioMeier, who was murdered by neo- #Nazis at the nearby underground station in November 1992. Since then, there have been annual anti-fascist demonstrations in his memory. In the ‘Villa Felix’, as the house was later called, there is, among other things, self-managed #Clubrooms. Since 2003, the Schreiner has been owned by a co-operative and thus successfully taken off the #rental market. It makes sense to #squat!

There's lots in there for transport buffs - road (cars, coaches & lorries) & rail (steam) mainly, but also aircraft and shipping.
It's a fascinating 20 minute window into a dissapeared world.
