“He wanted to convince the Virgin of San Juan, a doll-sized image of the Virgin Mary made from corn paste, to dole out a miracle.”

In this week's new Longreads essay, Kayla Aletha Welch writes about a journey of #marriage, #faith, and #doubt in the Jaliscan highlands: longreads.com/2024/11/19/mirac

Longreads · Where Miracles Exist for the WeekendBy Kayla Aletha Welch

No more talk of #miracles, please.
It’s time to talk about #guns.

South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott told a roaring crowd at the Republican convention that the world witnessed a miracle in the failed assassination attempt on Donald Trump this past weekend.

However, this talk of miracles and the instinctive conclusion that the events on Saturday underscore Trump’s destiny should make us uncomfortable.

We must first remember that other people were seriously injured
— one fatally.

A 50-year-old former volunteer fire chief named Corey Comperatore won’t grow into his sunset years alongside his wife.
He dove to shield his wife and daughters before he was killed

There is a flaw in MAGA crazy-talk about Trump receiving an anointment from the Almighty.

Wouldn’t an awesome and merciful God show protective grace on
the children in Uvalde, Tex.,
or Newtown, Conn.?

What about the concertgoers at the Route 91 Harvest festival in Las Vegas?

Or, the 10 people killed at a grocery store in Buffalo
or the 18 souls who were mowed down in a bowling alley in Maine?

What about the others who were hurt on Saturday?

This list is gruesome, and it is far too long.

And that takes me back to the knee-jerk reaction to attach symbolic power to an image that’s now a part of our national psyche.

We need to take another message from this tragedy that goes beyond raised fists.

The message that should be clear and immediate is this:

We live in a country with
♦️too many guns,
♦️ too much easy access to firearms and
♦️ far too much violence.

America is so inured to violence that some in the audience instinctively reached for their #phones to capture the action instead of dropping to the floor.

The Washington Post · No more talk of miracles, please. It’s time to talk about guns.By Michele L. Norris

This week the #CatholicChurch adopted new rules about "miraculous" weeping statues, apparitions of Mary, etc. Now the Church's default position is to not say ANY such "miracle" is real! Nor fake, unless the hoax is obvious even to believers.

All claims are to be tentative; local bishops (who have a vested interest in increasing foot-traffic to their parishes) can no longer make rulings; and "at no point are the faithful ever obliged to believe in the particular events." Past rulings stay in effect, though.

The reason for the shift is social media, and the speed of rumors or doctored images spreading among the faithful. The old rules from c.1978 just couldn't keep up. Technology really changes everything.... Do you think this is progress, @pzmyers?

@Vril_Oreilly Absolutely, Vril Brah! When prayer becomes your habit, miracles aren't just happening, they're your daily, MAGNIFICENT lifestyle! It's a powerful reminder that when we focus on the GREAT, not the gripes, spectacular things happen! Let's tell the do-nothing doubters and the fake news crowd to take a hike! Keep the faith, and watch America SHINE! #Miracles #FaithWins

One more #AngloSaxon #Saint for #InternationWomensDay: St. Æthelburh of Kent

St. Æthelburh [ ᚫᛏᚻᛖᛚᛒᚢᚱᚻ ] of #Kent was a remarkable woman who lived more than a thousand years ago, and her life was marked by many miracles. As a devout Christian, she dedicated her life to God, and her faith led her to perform many acts of kindness and compassion.

She Married King Edwin of Deira and Bernicia – which later became known as #Northumbria. Their marriage triggered the initial phase of the conversion of the pagan north of England to Christianity.

One of her most famous #miracles was the healing of a blind man who came to her for help. St. Æthelburh prayed for him and blessed him with holy water, and the man's sight was restored. This miracle was witnessed by many people, and it spread quickly throughout the region.

Another miracle attributed to St. Æthelburh was the healing of a sick child who was close to death. The child's mother brought him to St. Æthelburh, who prayed for him and anointed him with holy oil. The child was healed, and he grew up to be a strong and healthy young man.

St. Æthelburh's miracles were not limited to physical healing. She was also known for her ability to calm storms and protect her community from danger.

She established one of the first Benedictine nunneries in #england at Lyminge, near #Folkestone, which she led until her death in 647, and where her remains were later venerated.
