“The optimists among us
taking heart because it is spring
skip along
attending their meetings
signing their e-mail petitions
marching with their satiric signs
singing their we shall overcome songs
posting their pungent twitters and blogs
believing in a better world
for no good reason
I envy them
said the old woman…”

South of Kyōto City, the major Shintō shrine closest our house is Nagaoka Tenman-gū (長岡天満宮), associated with the presence of the statesman-scholar Fujiwara Michizane (菅原道真) over a thousand years ago in the Heian Period. He was not the only case of being exiled wrongly by the Imperial court, followed by natural disasters, interpreted as the work of his angry ghost, then being deified as the Shintō kami Tenjin (天神) to supplicate his spirit. Thus the shrine is also called Nagaoka Tenjin (長岡天神). Students facing high-stakes exams have traditionally prayed at the many Tenjin shrines to this god of learning. Today, the large shrine grounds provide a place to walk and commune with nature as well as to worship and to hold hopeful events. Now is peak cherry blossom season, so here are four scenes where I often go for contemplative hikes.

Photos from today's family walkabout.
1. The trail ended at a tree. The other side of the tree dropped off about ten feet to the river below.
2. The boys had fun writing in the sand beside the river. This one is my teenage son's message that "Skipper Drifter was here." Skipper Drifter is his online handle.
3. Our 8 year old had a motivational message and wrote "never give up" in the sand.
4. We found a large, secluded riverbank where we spent some time exploring and playing.
5. The boys throwing rocks into the river.
6. Family "art" project, sticks and stones carefully stacked on the side of a fallen tree.
7. Old swallow nests on the underside of a bridge.
8. Vandalism is bad but sometimes funny.

This deep blue sky has a wonderful colour but is a sign that the night will be frosty with minus degrees. After more than +20°C, we had a sudden temperature drop last evening. Today only 9°C with a strong and icy NE wind.
I love that time when the edges of the forests and the orchards explose in green, white and rose. The green of April is the most beautiful one!
