@gloriouscow take a look: #GEOS for x86 now #opensource :) https://github.com/bluewaysw/pcgeos
Part 1 of our #CircularArcs crowdfunding is fully funded – 112K CHF raised!
We’re very close to securing Part 2 too – just 13K CHF to go to bring full arc support into #QGIS!
We've extended the campaign until the end of July!

What would you consider the single most sophisticated piece of software ever written for the C64?
I'm on the fence between GEOS and the Newcomer RPG. The former is a whole OS but the latter uses effectively all of the C64's memory and its 14 disks long!
Circular arcs in QGIS are crucial for precise geographic data! Currently, support is limited, but you can help change that. With our crowdfunding campaign, we aim to enhance their management in GEOS for reliable processing, precise intersections, and new possibilities. We’re halfway there, and we need your help to go all the way!

1/2 I was talking to @howtophil about GEOS and decided that I would spin up a VM to run it. Let me tell you what I learned. I used Qemu and started with FreeDOS (FD14 is really slick!) but GEOS20 would error out on launch. Something to do with memory/files/buffers but none of my fiddling would get it to work. I thought it might have something to do with memory management so I spun up a generic MSDOS6 VM...

I just got an amazing package from a guy who used to work at Geoworks: shrink-wrapped copies of the 8-bit stuff. Any 8-bit Apple GEOS users out there? #GEOS #Commodore
Flash back to last year: Yeah, it was a bit slow, but #GEOS was actually very impressive!

8x8 Font Advent Calendar 2024 Day 17
Chylos
GEOS is a massively underappreciated piece of computing history providing usable Mac-like UI on 8-bit machines with a fraction of the available power.
It was also home to many great proportional and varied-sized bitmap fonts including this absolute gem found tucked away in a Glenn Holmer's "Cenbe Font Catalog" PDF.
I couldn't find any information beyond this such as the designer.

This global map of carbon dioxide was created using a model called Goddard Earth Observing System. #GEOS is a high-resolution weather reanalysis model, powered by supercomputers, that is used to represent what was happening in the atmosphere — including storm systems, cloud formations, and other natural events.

A brand new NASA video reveals the fascinating patterns of carbon dioxide moving around our atmosphere.
The visualization shows #CO2 pouring out from major cities in the U.S., before being blown into swirling eddies by atmospheric currents.
The video, which shows the CO2 patterns between January and March 2020, was created using a model named the Goddard Earth Observing System ( #GEOS ),
which uses supercomputers to simulate the atmosphere based on data from satellite instruments including the Terra satellite's #MODIS and the Suomi-NPP satellite's #VIIRS, as well as ground observations
