@mcnado Tetanus is also the perfect refutation to "vaccines work forever".

We've had the tetanus vaccine since 1924, the current variant dates to 1991. But it is still only considered effective for about ten years.

Others needing boosters or regular update: influenza, shingles (adult variant of chicken pox), diptheria, pertussis, and for some meningitus. Many other routine vaccines require multiple doses for full efficacy.

(Lay understanding, I'm sure you could think of others. CDC sourcing, for now: cdc.gov/vaccines/imz-schedules.)

“This number that we have now is almost certainly an undercount, & one that — when the season is declared over, & they compile all the data — it’s almost certain to go up,” said Dr. Sean O’Leary of the AAP.

There are likely several contributors to this season’s severity, but a big one is that fewer #children get #flu shots, added O’Leary, a U of CO #pediatric #infectious #diseases specialist.

The flu #vaccination rate for US children has plummeted from about 64% 5 yrs ago to 49% this season.

If you were wondering how the whole #Measles #Vaccination #antivax thing was going, it's not going well: 800 cases through April 17th, 3 deaths, 85 hospitalized (so *not* a good time) and something like 5% of inpatient cases get sepsis, 10% of inpatient cases gets acute kidney failure, 12% get pneumonia, 2-3% get encephalitis, not to mention immune damage. Not a good time at all.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention · Measles Update — United States, January 1...By CDC

"The spread of measles in the Southwest now constitutes the largest single outbreak since the United States declared the disease eliminated in 2000, federal scientists told state officials in a meeting on Monday. ...

'This is the largest outbreak in the U.S. since measles elimination was declared in 2000,' [Dr. Dan Filardo] said."

Vaccines are one of the greatest scientific success stories of our time. They have saved more than 154 million lives in the last 50 years — more than 1 life every 10 seconds.

Recent moves to strip funding from vaccine-related research are shortsighted and self-harming. As is the use of precious resources to revisit debunked claims of links to autism.

The best vaccine isn’t useful if it is not distributed, or not socially accepted. Vaccine equity and hesitancy remain great challenges. Globalizing antivaccine activism could become our greatest hurdle.

It is not time to defund, but rather invest in vaccines.

Vaccines are one of the greatest scientific success stories of our time. Vaccination has saved more than 154 million lives in the last 50 years — more than six lives every minute of every year.

Our technical ability to develop vaccines has outpaced our social, political, and financial systems for ensuring their use. Recent moves to strip funding from vaccine-related research are shortsighted and self-harming. As is the use of precious resources to revisit debunked claims of links to autism.

We should not allow misinformation, disinformation, ignorance and defunding to hinder vaccine development, deployment and use.

It is not time to defund, but rather invest in vaccines.

“It’s amazing how much good science you can destroy with $320 million and R.F.K. Jr. very fast.”

~ Seth Rogen

Elliot Kirschner thinks Rogen's reference to $320 million is to the total amount given by the Breakthrough Prize to scientists over the years. Rogen made the comment at the recent awards ceremony for that prize.

“'We do believe that there’s quite a large amount of cases that are not reported and underreported,' Sugerman said during a rare meeting of the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices Tuesday. ...

The majority of cases have been among unvaccinated children, with 2 children and one adult marking the first U.S. measles deaths in more than a decade and the first child measles death since 2003."
