Eric Alterman offers a touching reminiscence of his friend journalist Bill Moyers, noting:
"This ordained Baptist minister from a little town called Marshall, Texas, somehow became, for most practical purposes, my rabbi."
Alterman asks where Moyers got the fortitude to stick to his difficult and solitary path when he was very much a voice crying in the wilderness, especially in his native South.

Dan Froomkin offers some revisions of New York Times' style guide — to wit:
"Do not use 'conservative' to describe people who are not conservative. For instance: extremists, Christian nationalists, and authoritarians are not conservative. Conservatives believe in limited government, states’ rights, personal freedom, and personal integrity. Donald Trump is not a conservative; neither is the movement he leads…."
So much truth telling is rejecting the narrative that black and Indigenous people's historical cultures were not technologically advanced.
It turns out the iron production methods that turned the UK into a superpower were appropriated from enslaved Jamaican people.
Reminds me of Bruce Pascoe's Dark Emu that describes engineering in Aboriginal societies that was erased by white settlers.

I've reached the half-way point of my new novel, and the plot, themes and characters are coming together nicely.
Now I need to focus on sprinkling joy in between the tougher scenes and themes. #IndigenousJoy, humour, collective love, and #TruthTelling are essential factors of storytelling. Especially when writing back to the colonial archives.
[I'm writing a spec fic-inspired literary novel to honour the Stolen Generations, and highlight the justice that is still needed. Aboriginal children commonly referred to as the Stolen Generations were forcibly removed from their families, to be trained for unpaid domestic servitude and labouring for white families and businesses. A widespread historical injustice and violence; similar to the survivors of Residential Schools on Turtle Island]

I'm publicly calling bullshit on the R U OK? campaign. I was at my most lowest low for a few months earlier this year when my nephew died - where were the R U OK messages and check ins? One good friend made a huge effort, coming down to Tas to cheer me up and staying in touch regularly. Other than that...crickets and tumbleweeds. It seems nice sharing this campaign once a year on Facebook, but if you're not there supporting people during their heartbreakingly down times, it's kinda just virtue signalling.
