Obviously, you should never add your street address; but if you live in a big city, adding city and country should be reasonably safe.
If you live in a small town, maybe add your region instead.
I chose to write "Vejle, Denmark, Europe", because not everyone knows that Vejle is a city in Denmark, and some do not know that Denmark is a country in Europe.

This is my best tip:
If you have not yet done so, add a location field to your profile. It only takes a few seconds to do, but it makes it way easier for others to understand your context.
Quite often when I write something about Denmark, people will reply, "Yeah, we have that too!" — with no information about WHERE they are.
Mastodon is international, so if you want people to understand your context, use the web browser interface and go to
Profile page > Edit > Extra fields

Use the field "in:library" to search only in the toots you have interacted with some day.
Using this, I just dug out a toot from an exchange I had in mid-2023 in 1 second, and which was lost among a gazillion of other bookmarks.

You need a good profile picture on Mastodon and this is why:
Picture 1: A lot of users use the default picture or something similarly anonymous. This makes it really difficult for other users to recognize the conversation with you from other conversations.
Picture 2: When using an easily recognizable photo of yourself, or of something unique to you, other users can remember who you are from interaction to interaction. This builds relationships and strengthens our conversation.

One of my friend is trying mastodon rn, he tried to subscribe to an account and had the message "to continue, you need to follow from your account" (image below in french)
I sometimes have this problem as well when I click on a link to add a new tab, and suddenly I'm not on my server anymore and I am asked the same thing !
Isn't there a way, when you already have an account that you use all the time, to stay connected ?
