Before packing away the STE for now, yet another annoyance just got solved - I bought an external Gotek adapter/cabling a while back, but it couldn't fit together with the Ultrasatan. So I bought another kind of adapter, that has the floppy connector shifted towards the modulator.

This makes connecting an external Gotek drive AND certain ACSI devices at the same time possible. "Amazing" stuff. 🤪👍

The new adapter is shifted towards the modulator, so fits just fine with the Ultrasatan ASCI adapter. The photo shows both of them plugged at the same time.

The "TOS emulator" runs fine, so I pulled out the soldering iron and installed the STE "DMA fix" I also bought.

This is a recent-ish hardware solution to work around a signal timing issue with the older C025913-38 DMA chip in these machines, that can cause data corruption with ACSI peripherals. Atari made a newer version of the chip, the C398739-001A, that doesn't suffer from the issue, but that's hard to find. This adapter board offers a solution for the older chip.

The "ST DMA converter" board, both top and bottom sides. The top side is empty, just pins for the old DMA chip to sit in, the bottom side contains several SMD components, including some 74-series logic chips, capacitors and resistors.
Mosaic-image of the installation process. The managed to pull the old DMA chip very cleanly. Not just the board got minor to no damage, but also the chip's pins remained very clean. I soldered the DMA fix board directly into the mainboard. The DMA chip now sits on top of it.
Because the "TOS emulator" board hangs over the DMA chip, I was not sure, if it would still fit after the DMA fix is installed. It does, and this is what's seen on this photo. I managed to install the DMA fix very low, so there's even some small air gap between the top of the DMA chip and the bottom of the ROM board, they don't touch.
The STE is assembled again, and it's now running with the UltraSatan ACSI2SD card device just fine. Previously this combination was very prone to data trashing due to the DMA issue.

Toying with the Sidecartridge "TOS Emulator" I bought for my Atari STE. It's a Pi Pico based ROM replacement, that lets you swap among several different ROM images from software. This is great, because old software and demos prefer TOS 1.x, but the desktop is much nicer on newer versions, plus there's EmuTOS to play with. And everything can be managed from just software alone.

We need this - or a similar soft-switch solution - for Amiga 500 & co!
