55 years ago this week I bought this t-shirt for $5 in Lawrence KS. That was the week after 4 students were killed at an anti-Vietnam protest at Kent State. I was finishing my sophomore year at university, and the shirt was new then. It ss a bit old and worn today (just like me).

That was a very polarized period in the history of this country, as is the current era. I will be amazed (and grateful) if we get out of this one without protestors being shot. Students are still targets (especially international students), but lots of others have targets on them today. And lawlessness at the top is even more pronounced than it was in 1970.

I do wish that the the arc of history would bend in the direction of justice just a little faster. But the struggle continues.

Light sabers are very odd, physically. It's never clear what they are, exactly. Light, of course, doesn't work that way.

Not only is it weird that they extend and stop at a fixed distance, but also, they apparently can impact each other, like matter. A light beam will happily pass right through another, without effect.

Some kind of contained plasma is more likely. But that wouldn't impact rigidly, either.

In honor of #Maythe4th, just going to note: religion is a mainstay in Star Wars.

The Jedi and Sith are both religious orders. So, too, is “The Tribe,” the group to which Din Djarin — the titular Mandalorian — belongs.

Lucas himself has spoken at length about how the Force is meant to be religious.

On occasion of it being #MayThe4th, here's Jeffrey Lewis singing the plot of the original Star Wars to the tune of the Star Wars theme, in Stockholm a few years ago:

in 2003, THING1 was 6 years old and THING2 was 3. i was 2 years into homeschooling after 9/11 up-ended T1s entry to public school. so i used everything to get them to read.

so when they asked their dad to teach them how to play it, he did so with one caveat: they had to read back to him the prompts. boy, did that start the ball rolling. more in the alt…
