Something fun!

We wrote a children's book that we're providing to the classrooms we help. It introduces children to tech-based problem solving in a fun way. But, we need a little help getting it over the finish line. You can help us out and get a copy here at the link here: igg.me/at/rtfbook.

The book tells a story about a dog and duck duo, Widget and Zip, who use tech to solve problems their chicken coop faces creatively. They use 3D printers, Raspberry Pi's, and other tools to show that there's more than one way to solve a problem. The book also includes an illustrated glossary that describes the tech and a dedicated resource page with teacher-designed activities the students can work through in the classroom or on their own.

Our author and illustrator is Betsy Von Hagen. She's a kindergarten teacher and so full of passion and energy. It was a blast to work with her to develop Widget and Zip and think of neat ways they could solve problems in their chicken coop. youtube.com/watch?v=jTyZSnl1Tx

If you contribute to our launch campaign, you can get an early discounted copy of the book, signed copies, limited edition stickers, a custom doodle from the author, and more. You can also buy a classroom pack or live reading from the author to gift to a teacher you love.

Simply put, the more copies of the book we sell through this campaign, the more free copies we can afford to distribute to schools in low-income communities. We appreciate you sharing with your friends and family!

Today is the absolute last day to enter the Rural Technolgy Fund Golden Ticket Fundraiser. The winner gets seats in all my online training classes, signed copies of all my books, training from Dragos, and $500 to spend on tech books. All the details are here: ruraltechfund.org/goldenticket.

I’ve got some great news to share on this last day… as of this morning, we’ve exceeded our goal of raising $100K. That means I’m going to choose TWO Golden Ticket winners. This is massive news for the RTF and these food banks.

Speaking for the RTF, we’ll use the money we raised to do lots of great work. We’ll fund tech ed programs in rural schools and libraries. That includes classes (like computer science), after school clubs (like Girls Who Code), competitive robotics teams (like FIRST), and more.

We have so many great stories to share about the work we’ve done in this area all over the country. Here are a few recent ones:

- California: ruraltechfund.org/building-fro

- New Mexico: ruraltechfund.org/connecting-c

- Massachusetts: ruraltechfund.org/outside-her-

- Georgia: ruraltechfund.org/one-libraria

We’ll also use this money to provide technology access to students with disabilities. This includes items like tablets with text-to-speech apps, specialized keyboards, portable digital magnifiers, and accessibility software.

Finally, this money will help fund our scholarship programs. We use these programs to give rural students a little help when they’re starting their college education in technical fields. Here are this year’s winners: ruraltechfund.org/2022-scholar.

By the way, if you’ve already made a donation, check to see if your workplace provides an employee match program. The RTF is listed in most of the major platforms like Benevity and Bright Funds. It’s an easy way to 1.5-2x your impact.

Thank y'all so much for supporting our work this year. What we do is incredibly challenging and emotionally draining at times, but it's also rewarding, and I'm thankful for the folks that believe in it and support it.

@SpockResists

I was only grudging participating in the #DeadParrotSketch - my other #SocialMedia is #DIscord (though I do keep in touch with some groups on #ZuckBook (mostly event tracking)).

I work in #TechEd and had the account and a #LinkedIn account to boost posts by folks on my team.

I understand I'm an #Outlier - I have always been, since I learned the term in 7th-grade health because my score was 30 points higher than the next score on the Red Cross test.
