HVDC Networks Come to Europe

"Driving this expansion in #HVDC are major technical advances.

The flexible control over current and voltage is the hallmark of voltage-source converter (VSC) technology.

Germany has led #standardization TenneT asked all of its suppliers to offer compatible 525-kV HVDC systems with room for extra switchgear, creating the option to interconnect today’s segments in larger networks."

Bring it on!

**eDNA Metabarcoding Data in the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF)**

biss.pensoft.net/article/11067

Biodiversity Information Science and StandardseDNA Metabarcoding Data in the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF)The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) is an international network and data infrastructure that provides free and open access to biodiversity data from around the world, enabling scientists, policymakers, and the public to explore and analyze information about the Earth's living organisms. Originally developing at a distance from GBIF, metabarcoding of DNA has become a standard tool for detecting species in bulk samples or environmental samples such as soil, water, and air. Raw sequence data (fastq files) are often shared and deposited in dedicated repositories. Seen from a biodiversity documenting perspective, raw sequences have limited value, as several steps of bioinformatic processing and filtering are needed to arrive at a credible set of sequences that can be interpreted by comparing to a sequence reference database. Most often, such interpretated DNA metabarcoding data come in the shape a table with abundances of so-called Amplicon Sequence Variants (ASV) or Operational Taxonomic Units (OTU) across samples—a so-called ASV/OTU table—and some associated files, e.g., spatiotemporal and other sample metadata, and taxonomic inferences of sequences. In this session we present GBIF state-of-work and plans for developing and improving publishing and standardisation of OTU table-like biodiversity data for easier and broader reuse, including a prototype tool using the OTU table as a publishing model, mapping this research-familiar data format to the Darwin Core standard (Darwin Core Task Group 2009).

For giving away your personal data (full name, address, email addr), you can get a free copy of the #PDF standards {ISO 32000-2:2002, ISO/TS 32001:2022, ISO/TS 32002:2022} (aka core standards for PDF 2.0). There seems to be some deal between foxit, apryse, and Adobe to make them accessible. It's something! 👍 #standardization #adobe

ten months later and these discussions largely stalled out. @vpzom did make a post outlining how they implemented some of the ideas discussed into #Lotide and many discussions have come out of this discussion so all and all not a bad outcome but still I really hoped there might be a bit more agreement on how to move forward with #fediverse group #standardization in the last year

Great, where is the time, when people wrote down a PoC for a thing and then provided a protocol spec in order to establish a standard? Looking at the current trend of end-to-end-encrypted calendar and contacts clients it's kind of worrisome that no one came up with a proper standard there.

Get things standardized to allow more than one software to implement things and this way reach all people instead of keeping tight control over your users.
