I'll be at WebSummit Lisbon 2024, presenting Hexabot! Come find me on Wednesday, November 13th at Stand A264 to check Hexabot.ai .
Looking forward to amazing conversations, new connections, and sharing what we've been building. If you're attending, swing by Stand A264—let's talk about the future of conversational AI!
In the #w3c #voiceinteraction community group we are just discussing if personal digital assistants can be called personal if all data is shared with others.
Any opinions on that?
After writing a heart-wrenching essay about working as a real-estate chatbot handler, Laura Preston was invited to be 'honorary contrarian speaker' at a conversational AI conference.

GPT-4o (“o” for “omni”) is a step towards much more natural human-computer interaction—it accepts as input any combination of text, audio, and image and generates any combination of text, audio, and image outputs.
Nothing e ChatGPT uniscono le forze per creare un'esperienza di comunicazione più avanzata e personalizzata per gli utenti
This is a beautifully-written, haunting, ambiguous and resonant exploration of one of the founding fathers of #AI - Joseph Weizenbaum - and the demons that drove his work in early #ConversationalAI with #Eliza. As Weizenbaum rightly asserts, our context, our history, our experience, shapes our relationship with, and toward, technology.
"Yet, as Eliza illustrated, it was surprisingly easy to trick people into feeling that a computer did know them – and into seeing that computer as human. Even in his original 1966 article, Weizenbaum had worried about the consequences of this phenomenon, warning that it might lead people to regard computers as possessing powers of “judgment” that are “deserving of credibility”. “A certain danger lurks there,” he wrote."
A certain danger lurks there. As applicable now in an age of #GenerativeAI as it was in the 1960s.
Thank you @bentarnoff for such an incisive piece. h/t to @criticalai for bringing it to my attention.

A hearty "fuck you" in advance to the person who inevitably writes the obituary of someone they (purportedly) care about by telling some conversational AI like ChatGPT or something to do it for them.
If your org is looking to sponsor an academic conference on natural language generation and/or dialogue and related areas (e.g. #ConversationalAI, #DialogueSystems, #CUI), let me know and I can put you in touch with this year's sponsorship chair for the joint meeting of SIGDIAL and INLG.
I never would have thought in a million years that I could install #Bing on my phone. But here we are. #Microsoft really made a fantastic move. I'm more inclined to use Bing boosted by #ChatGPT than #Google.
2/ For the researchers/engineers/designers: how do we design a chatbot to avoid such harm and manipulation? Other than always striving for providing unbiased and truthful answers, shouldn't we de-anthropomorphize it as much as possible for information-seeking use cases?
@emilymbender just curious, does conversation analysis have any role to play in building these #ConversationalAI models?
Is the Jefferson transcription system useful here?

2 Human-centered studies on language technology and AI - often focusing on evaluation, design and user experience. I test the limits of what language technologies can do, explain why the limits are the way they are, and work on how these technologies can become (more) useful, embrace diversity, and support new forms of communication, instead of ending up in the dustbin of history as overhyped commercial gimmicks. So far I’ve worked on #conversationalAI and #ASR
