The #postal #collaboration is a significant escalation in the #Trump admin’s #immigration *crackdown*. #DHS officials [& #Musk’s #DOGE] have previously partnered with #tax, #housing & #PublicHealth authorities. But the involvement of the Postal Inspection Service, the nation’s oldest #LawEnforcement agency, means efforts to pursue #undocumented #immigrants have expanded into one of the most mundane govt activities: delivering the #mail.

The #LawEnforcement arm of #USPS has begun cooperating w/federal #immigration ofcls to locate people suspected of being in the country illegally, acc/to 2 people familiar… & documents obtained by WaPo—dramatically broadening the scope of #Trump’s #MassDeportations campaign.

…#HumanRights Watch reported in 2023 that #Saudi border guards used explosive weapons & gunfire to kill hundreds of Ethiopian migrants, including women & children, trying to cross the border. A Saudi ofcl rejected the report.

#SaudiArabia, the world's biggest #oil exporter, has tried for years to reduce the number of #undocumented migrants entering & working there, often in low-paid jobs. UN studies have shown it is home to an estimated 750k #Ethiopians.

In 2001, #Durbin introduced the #DreamAct w/Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT), in an effort to create a path to #citizenship for younger #undocumented #immigrants who had been brought to the US as children. It never became #law, but it laid the foundation for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals [#DACA] program, which was announced by President #Obama in 2012 & protected hundreds of thousands of immigrants from #deportation. #Trump has tried to end the program, & it remains under legal threat.

#Durbin’s departure will reverberate in the #Senate, where he played a prominent role on a host of big issues & was considered a forceful advocate of party positions. He was among the first to push for a path to #citizenship for some #undocumented immigrants brought to the #UnitedStates illegally as children, a group that came to be known as #Dreamers that became the focal point of successive failed efforts to overhaul #immigration laws.

A fed judge indefinitely blocked #Trump’s effort to curb #BirthrightCitizenship for #undocumented immigrants & temporary foreign visitors, a decision that is likely to mean the #ExecutiveOrder will not take effect as planned later this month.

US Dist Judge Deborah L. Boardman issued a preliminary #injunction after a court hearing in MD, in a lawsuit brought by #CivilRights groups aiming at stopping Trump’s order on the grounds that it violates the #citizenship clause of the #14thAmendment.

The #Trump admin is considering deputizing state & local law enforcement to arrest *suspected* #undocumented #immigrants at traffic stops & other locations, resurrecting a program that the Obama admin terminated amid allegations that it led to #RacialProfiling.

Russell Hott, a top official at #ICE, told the nation’s sheriffs’ association at a conference last weekend that the new admin is examining ways to restart the program, called the “task force model.”
