The Tower & The Star

One must accept death in order to truly live.

The concept of a relationship as having expectations, as having any rules, as bonds, must dissolve in order for your partner to have real agency.

Each partner must accept that the relationship is over before it can begin.

Each person is a solar system surrounding the brilliant star 🌟 of their divine spark, they can not be contained.

If you shine bright enough, you won't have to worry about your loved ones leaving.

In this essay I will...

I have been building scripts to automate some tasks including managing my interface with this ActivityPub server. I want to push a single button or enter one command to publish notes and files via several protocols and have each reference link to all. The protocols include:

1. ActivityPub (Mastodon, this server)
2. Preprints / TechRXIV / Zenodo / Figshare, etc.
3. NNTP / Usenet
4. Static Web Site
5. Blog
6. BlueSky
7. Archive.org
8. PHP Blog / Wordpress / Blogger
9. P2P network(s)
10 ... ??? Still working out the elsewhere(s) and how and whyfor.

The Internet is so full of disparate platforms and protocols that I am almost tempted to just manage a static website like in the good old days of web 1.0 or even web 1/2 and forget about everything else except that and the Internet Archive and Usenet.

I miss the old days where one could put up a static site and push a link and description into a chat room or forum and watch the site get hammered for fifteen minutes. Twenty years ago I ran a rant site that got hundreds of visits per day and I was quite happy with that.

Nowadays there is so much going on that even 1000 real human page views in a month is sometimes too much to expect. Why would anyone want to look at my silly essays or PDF files when every day is Caturday or Saturdog with infinite memes and endless rage outlets? Why read about my strange musings and puzzles when there are endless memes about the empire and the endless bogeymen out to eat us all?

Yet I cast my runes out upon the rivers of ether anyway; just in case someone seeks to get high on a supply of digits.

I've really quite fallen out of love with LoTRO it feels.

The community is really nice but it feels like all I ever do is level and there's not much to do for story cause it's all locked behind 150 Levels of Quests.

Focusing on FFXIV as my main MMO, then sides would be Guild Wars 2 and WoW.

I've also been enamored with Java Minecraft and The Sims lately.

Thought occurs that the airline and restaurant sectors share interesting parallels:

  • Highly sensitive to energy costs (fuel/food).
  • Highly reliant on labour inputs.
  • Strong differentiation on service levels.
  • Asses in seats.
  • Turnover / turnaround.
  • Location dependencies, though one bridges points, the other seeks high-traffic locations.
  • Safety and regulation play strong roles.
  • Pilot / Chef dynamic.
  • Both notorious as appealing but tumultuous businesses.
  • Business-level service plays a strong role for both.
  • Private-service provision an increasingly emergent trend.
  • Considerable prep / downtime / maintenance element.

I wonder, how many of us expect to be *actively learning* in some way throughout our life. I don't mean as kids in school, I mean our whole life?

I ride dressage and there's no getting around that we are never done learning on the back of a horse. I've been riding for 20 years, I still take weekly lessons. And every time we tick off that homework, finish it, there's something new to learn. Always.

#ThrowbackThursday to the year my great aunt, Dotty, adopted an orphaned African Grey Elephant. (It was 1979 and I assume the laws were a little different then)

The baby girl was named Akili and she lived one hell of a life in rural Etna, California. My aunt owned about 45 acres of farmland and forest near the base of Mount Shasta. It was wild having an elephant cousin that showed up for reunions.

Much earlier, I said I’d be back here tonight to sing Maya Angelou’s praises and share some stories about how her work is woven into my life. That has meant a day full of haunting memories and music playing in the background of my mind and more stories than time will allow, so I’ll stick to a few highlights. 1/

I wonder if anyone reflected about the pros/cons of joining a fediverse instance (including using your own) and the linkage to online identity? For example, if you're a physicist, employed by a University, participating in several external organizations (related or not your physics), which fediverse(s) should you have an account on? #fediverse #musing
