Those who use "Luddite" as a slur obviously know nothing about history.

The Luddites were professionals who knew perfectly well that the combination of capitalism and technology would wreak havoc on society. As it did back then and still does today.

Some tech bros should better read books instead of just feeding them into their latest large language model.

On way of thinking how the major trading economies might be impacted by a trade war prompted by Trump's 'tariff shock' is to look at the proportion of the countries' economies that are accounted for by goods exported.

Of course this doesn't include services, which for the UK here a significant proportion of overall exports (as they are for the US)... but as tariffs are (currently) only being applied to goods it give you some data to consider this evening!

Eggs are so expensive that some Americans are decorating potatoes this Easter
Eggs tend to be a staple for Easter celebrations, whether they're being decorated, rolled, or baked into quiches and served with brunch. But with U.S. egg prices still stubbornly high, many Americans are looking for alternatives to some of their favourite traditions.

"The paper clip problem" is a philosophical warning about how #AI could run amuck and destroy the world.

Imagine an AI programmed with the goal of maximizing paper clip production that gains super intelligence using its vast power to strip mine every ounce of iron and divert resources away from other activities, putting people and environment in existential threat.

Now replace "paper clip" with "profits" and "AI" with "CEO" or "billionaire" and you've found the true issue we face.

Liquidity in the S&P 500 index is approaching fairly low levels.

This shows that traders are generally pulling back from the market and there are less traders willing to buy/sell shares and options contracts right now.

What happens when there is less participation? Prices can swing wildly because it takes much less effort to push the indexes around.

Meanwhile in the world of work

The good news:

few workers think their jobs are meaningless, despite some claims the view is widespread;

the bad news:

workplace bullying & abuse are too high (if not at epidemic proportions that some fear);

and:

hybrid working is a much more longer term shift in working practice, and as such explains why people are resisting the recent call to 'return to the office'!

IDK what chaos #Trump brings, but you'll want to understand this:

"The only potential governor on them is, oddly enough, the bond market. If, in fact, the investor class around the world says, 'You know what, we're just not doing it this way; we don't like what's going on here;' they can vote with their wallet and they can say, "we're not going to be buying your bonds unless you're going to pay us a lot more for them.'" -- Andrew Ross Sorkin

He's describing the "bond vigilante".
