Astronomers have spotted the largest known object in the universe.
The Quipu superstructure is enormous, spanning 1.4 billion light years – and it could violate one of our fundamental assumptions about the universe.
Hans Böhringer at the Max Planck Institute for Physics in Munich and his colleagues have named this cosmic structure Quipu after an Incan counting system made from knotted rope.

Happy birthday, Max Planck!
Many know Max Planck as a brilliant physicist, #NobelPrize winner and the originator of #quantumtheory. But he was also a dedicated family man, a passionate musician and mountaineer as well as a skilled scientific organizer and networker. He was born on April 23rd, 1858, in Kiel / Germany.
Exciting findings in @CurrentBiology reveal how symbiotic relationships evolved over 62 million years, shedding light on coevolution dynamics. Kudos to researchers from @MPI_Bio! #Symbiosis #Evolution #LeafBeetle #DigestiveEnzyme #MaxPlanckInstitute

Nightingales are great singers, but how well can they hit the tone? Scientists from Daniela Vallentin’s group at our institute found that nightingales can imitate the pitch of whistles in real time! Read more: https://www.bi.mpg.de/news/2023-07-vallentin
Groundbreaking science, published in prestigious journals: Ilaria Vitali and Johannes Kappel receive the Young Scientist Award for their outstanding scientific publications! Read more about their research: https://www.bi.mpg.de/news/2023-06-ysa
Welcome guests on our campus: Family geese! At both of our locations, we try to promote biodiversity on campus. You can also discover offspring in the many nesting boxes, tadpoles in our small lakes and a variety of insects in the flowering meadows.
New study from the Klein department finds novel mechanism regulating eating behavior: the ‘hunger hormone’ ghrelin activates specialized neurons in the amygdala, which regulate appetite and cause the pleasure of eating. Read the paper:

“Bad” weather for bats? Temperature and humidity affect ultrasound. Scientists from our institute examined the effects of weather on the echolocation calls of three bat species and found that even though some slightly adapt their calls to “bad” weather, they don’t compensate the decrease in detection range.
