Astronomers have spotted the largest known object in the universe.

The Quipu superstructure is enormous, spanning 1.4 billion light years – and it could violate one of our fundamental assumptions about the universe.

Hans Böhringer at the Max Planck Institute for Physics in Munich and his colleagues have named this cosmic structure Quipu after an Incan counting system made from knotted rope.

Green light for LISA, the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna! On 25 January 2024, it was officially included in ESA's science programme. 🎉

LISA, a laser interferometer, will detect gravitational waves in space. 〰️🌌 The mission, which is due to start in 2035, is being largely supported by the Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics in Hannover.

“Bad” weather for bats? 🦇☔ Temperature and humidity affect ultrasound. Scientists from our institute examined the effects of weather on the echolocation calls of three bat species and found that even though some slightly adapt their calls to “bad” weather, they don’t compensate the decrease in detection range.
