It was at about this time 10 years ago, on Saturday, 23 May, when I burst into uncontrollable tears in a packed pub on the corner of Parliament St in Dublin

The official result of the marriage equality referendum had just been announced on TV - I had led the Dublin South Central constituency campaign, and months of effort, exhaustion, emotion, and relief erupted from within me

Ireland said Yes

An account from then: slow-journalism.com/from-the-a

www.slow-journalism.comMoment that mattered: Ireland votes to legalise same-sex marriagesOn the day after the vote, I went with some of our volunteers to the count centre to help with the tallying. Then at about lunchtime I went into town

Yesterday, I went to Queer Space Heidelberg to see The 34th, a documentary about the campaign for same-sex marriage in Ireland. In reality, it’s more about Marriage Equality, the organisation, rather than the wider movement. That’s fine, but it does mean some of the most important parts of the campaign aren’t mentioned at all.

#Introduction. Right, so I’ve been involved in #feminist/#queer #activism since my teens e.g. #Repeal, #MarRef, founder-member of LINC (Cork LBT resource centre). I’m a literary scholar, researching/teaching #IrishStudies #Gender & #Sexuality studies at #UL (University of Limerick). I live with my community-worker partner in #WestCork (and yes, we grow our own veg); I’m a member of #ChoralConFusion, Cork’s #LGBT inclusive #choir and of #WestCorkKayakClub (slow-learner division).
