Petition to have the UN officially rename North America to “Turtle Island”
Stumbled across this map of North America Turtle Island, which shows the natural features of the continent without national borders and with traditional indigenous names for major cities and various archaeological sites.
Not gonna lie, this is so cool. And Turtle Island sounds so much more poetic than the latinization of some random Italian guy’s name.

I am a white linguist who works with a Native American tribe in California on their language (an outside linguist). In my inbox today, some project coordinator in CA wants to know if I can translate about 30 words into a completely unrelated CA Native American language that I have never worked with, for a white artist's sculpture. By tomorrow. With no asking permission of the tribe involved. No, that would be a no. I told them that they need consent of the tribe in question, they need to get in touch with someone who actually works with this particular language, and that building trust with a Native community is not a one-day project. (Neither is translating the list of super-abstract words they want, like 'resilience,' especially into a dormant language.) Why would someone think this? Today is the first day of #Tunica language & culture summer camp, the first in-person camp since 2019. It’s been a while since I taught the language, having spent the last couple of years immersed in analysis of the documentation. I’m looking forward to getting back to engaging with the language in the present!
Also looking forward to seeing how much the kids I remember have grown and inevitably feeling old as a result.

Many indigenous #Mexican languages use the so-called “numeral classifiers” - similar to those existing in Mandarin Chinese and Japanese - which convey the form, position or nature of the counted object. The chart below shows some of the (still) used numeral classifiers in #Yucatec #MayaLanguage, although many of them are often replaced by two general markers: “túul” for animate nouns and “p’éel” for inanimate objects.

Fundraising campaign by an indigenous grassroots organization aimed at priting 2000 copies of a Nawat dictionary for free distribution. Nawat is the last, endangered Uto-Aztecan language in El Salvador. 
The University of Arizona is adding names in Native American languages of Arizona to building signs, along with the name of the language and a literal translation. The tribal leaderships are the ones sending the text and choosing which building they want. I love that the basketball stadium (high traffic) and Old Main (the original building of the university, symbolic) were among the first few picked. This initiative was started by AILDI and the Linguistics department, and was Ofelia Zepeda's idea. I am so pleased. There will be official ceremonies for these signs later, and more are underway. Interesting article from ABC news (no byline) about #IndigenousLanguages being mis-translated for languages spoken in #Alaska. The resulting translation was word salad, and what's more, the translation was done by a non-#Indigenous company.
The UN International Decade of Indigenous Languages will hopefully go some way to preventing this sort of thing in the future.
