My talk is tomorrow at 3 PM eastern, if learning about a textbook created as part of a community-engaged revitalization effort is your jam. #LanguageRevitalization #linguistics https://lingo.lol/@abdalian/113833860533484510
I'll be giving a talk at the American Philosophical Society on Thursday, January 23rd to discuss some of the successes and lessons learned from the creation and publication of the Tunica Language Textbook. The talk is on Zoom and is free but requires that you register at the link below. Feel free to register and attend if you're interested!
What is an extinct #language really?
Some thoughts on how Ubykh challenges the concepts of 'extinction' and 'revived' languages.
“Technology doesn’t save languages; people do it by speaking to each other, teaching, learning the language, writing stories, and singing songs.”

I’m thrilled to announce that I will be moving to #Philadelphia for a fellowship at the American Philosophical Society, where I will continue working on locating, building, and analyzing a corpus of #Tunica language documentation, as well as gathering all information I can on the history and culture of the Tunica-Biloxi people.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the best way to allocate time and effort in #LanguageRevitalization projects, and how best to organize those projects. Small organizational or interpersonal issues can have outsized impacts, especially on projects with limited personnel and ambitious goals.
If you know of any literature or personal advice that you’ve found useful in your language revitalization projects, let me know. I’d love recommendations.
I have been remiss in posting here that the #Tunica Language Textbook is published and available for purchase![1] Here’s the press release.[2]
If this sort of book is up your alley, have a look at it (you can preview it on Google Books)[3] and let me know what you think. Advice is crucial, as we’re planning a second textbook.

Today is the first day of #Tunica language & culture summer camp, the first in-person camp since 2019. It’s been a while since I taught the language, having spent the last couple of years immersed in analysis of the documentation. I’m looking forward to getting back to engaging with the language in the present!
Also looking forward to seeing how much the kids I remember have grown and inevitably feeling old as a result.

These White cosplayers stole an Indigenous language, copywrite it, & are now selling it back to the Indigenous community at exorbitant rates.
They recorded his grandmother speaking & now they are taking legal action to prevent him from accessing the language & *speaking his own language.* He is a language instructor.

"Inuit are 85% of Nunavut population, & 70% of us have Inuktut as our mother tongue. Yet all the schools operate in English. Greenland runs an entire government in Inuit language. They’ve had an Inuit language school system since 1979. If they can do it, we can do it.

Do you speak an indigenous language or learning one?
Please boost to improve the results and increase the sample size.
Does anyone know where I can continue my Inuktitut studies online? The classes I was taking ended, and I don’t have anyone to practice with and I’m worried what little I do know will go away. #Inuktitut #Inuit #Inuk #LanguageRevitalization #Indigenous
My code was deployed on #Wikipedia! You can now type #Cherokee using Wikipedia's input tools. This is a transliteration style keyboard, so typing "tsalagi" turns into "ᏣᎳᎩ" which can be easier to use because it doesn't require memorizing a new keyboard layout. #indigenous #LanguageRevitalization #linguistics
