#HomeLab update!

You can do so much unnecessary thinking with a broken rib…🤦🏻‍♂️

I’ve just pulled a trigger on short depth 1U server chassis, to put Raspberry Pi 5 and optic fiber modem in it…😅 It should remove the clutter in the cupboard and when I get that 1U 16 port switch, it will look much nicer together!😁

My plan is to bodge a faceplate of a keystone patch panel to the front of the case instead of the plastic cover, so I can have some rj45 keystones in the front…😂

#HomeNetwork update!

I’ve replaced most of the ethernet cabling to an appropriate length ones. Required some downtime, but managed to it without hurting myself.

Now… It’s apparent to me… SEND MORE SWITCH…😂

8 ports (4 PoE) is not enough and I’m this close to pulling the trigger on 16 port 1U PoE #UniFi switch.

I also really need to put that Raspberry Pi in some kind of an enclosure, and it needs a total rework… But at least it’s quiet and keeps my Wife, well, also quiet - at least about it!😂

Continued thread

Continuing the injury/boredom induced #HomeNetwork maintenance… The #BrokenRibProject🤣🤣🤣

I’ve ordered a set of 10 ethernet patch cords:

5x 0,25m - short ones for gateway - modem - switch - RPi all-in-one server connection

5x 1m - for the TV, Apple TV, Denon receiver, NanoKVM, RetroPi

I hate I have various types of cables. It’s finally going to be unified with all flat white patch cords.🙈

Fun fact: I've always mounted my access points on the ceiling or placed them high up on furniture, as the technical specs usually recommend. But today, I decided to try something different: I moved mine and mounted it on the wall.
Surprisingly, the Wi-Fi coverage in the most remote parts of my house has dramatically improved! It just goes to show how fascinating the study of wave propagation truly is.

I need to replace a #network cable running from the gateway to a switch. It’s going through 2 walls and 3 rooms and it’s going to be a piece of shit work, moving heavy furniture and removing and regluing the baseboards…

It’s been constantly downgrading auto-negotiated connection to 100Mbps…

Had to open the box, push the cable in with a finger and it’s now holding to 1 Gbps…😅 Wondering for how long, though…😅🙈

Finally I was able to discover my #Docker #containers automatically as services on my #gethomepage deployment. The issue was pretty simple and a stupid one in the end. 🫣 Running the homepage container as root when using Docker socket directly solved it. It is mentioned in the documentation, but I overlooked it for some reason. 🙄

I‘m still excited for the widget. Need to dig into building customized widgets. Anyone experiences?

Just got an email from Microsoft, telling me they will raise the price of MS 365 from 140 AUD to 180 AUD.

Time to rethink that solution.

For office apps we can move to LibreOffice, I think that will work more than fine for our needs.

I have been using OneDrive as backup (simply because we had it.), moving away from that definitely will need some research.

Any suggestions from #homelab / #homenetwork people regarding online backup services? I don't need that much. 0.5 TB would be fine, but 1TB would give some room going forward.

My new network switch for my home network has arrived and is installed.
TP-Link and easy-easy auto configuration.

I've been sent the POE version rather than the cheaper non-POE version I ordered, so it's future proofed I suppose.

My WiFi speeds seem to have marginally improved which is a bit odd considering it's an extra step in the network between router and me.

I bought it planning for the new broadband next month.

#GoodMorning! My Wife has plans, so I'm turning into stay at home dad for a moment. No cycling today. My brain is going to get bored, so I'm gonna plan some more unnecessary purchases...😅

This is my overly complicated apartment #network! It doesn't have to be that overbuilt, but it is. And I'm planning more...

This still needs one more switch (like 16 ports, PoE) and maybe one more AP so I can look at nice graphs, logs and stats...😂

It looks like there is actually no problem at all with #footiMac or my general network.

It's my wireless network that is freaking out. I am only getting 1Mbps throughput but devices on the wired network are getting 900+.

I'm running at 10BaseT speeds! lol.

So that's annoying….
It's either my Deco base stations, the physical cables, or the port/switch in the Telus router.
