So, continuing with #DecentSampler on #Apple. Well, the Decent Sampler runs smoothely. But this iPad MIDI thing I don't get to run.

Another option would be to use my old #MacBookPro 2017 with #OSX. Decent Sampler works out of the box on the old OS X 12.x.

I plug in my MIDI-USB source, which is a Roland GI20 guitar-to-midi system. OS X ignores it. I plug in some USB-MIDI-5pin adapter. OS X ignores it. I plug in another of these adapters/midi interfaces. Nothing.

Turns out in the end that the Roland GI20 does not work with Apple products at all. It only works out of the box with #Linux. For all other OSses it needs special drivers.

Apple offers me an update of IOS 15.something, and with one of the USB-MIDI-interfaces plugged into the oldskool MIDI port of the GI20 I can now finally use DecentSampler on an Apple machine, funnily on IOS 15, which fails with many MIDI applications such as MixingStation + fader controllers.

However, this iPad is too weak for DecentSampler.

So I found that there is #DecentSampler also for #iPad. I thought: Well this would be easy, I got this #CameraKit and I have a USB-#MIDI input device, so I could just have a dedicated computer/tablet playing these few samples.

I tend to forget that the MIDI support of #IOS 15.x is broken beyond repair.

Now I have 2 iPads with IOS 12 that have working MIDI support, but these are too old for many apps I need (such as Allen&Heath mixing console remote control).

I have 2 other iPads with IOS 15, most apps run on these, but none that need MIDI work.

I ordered two younger used iPads now which are supposed to run everything. For a while…

Needless to say, processing power, battery life and all the rest of the very old iPads would be sufficient for just everything. It's entirely a software compatibility thing going on. The IOS 15 devices have less processing power left than my older ones / waste too much of their power for a uselessly high screen resolution.

And I'd claim this is on purpose by #Apple.

Turns out with #DecentSampler not being capable of running multiple instances in my #Mixbus installation… so the dynamically linked version seems to do it.

The static built doesn't. I had used static because I had experienced trouble with GUIs of plugins in other places like OBS, and Ardour/Mixbus having abandoned GTK2 GUI support… but apparently it made things worse.

Still, this threw me out of the creative mood quite a bit, and now time has moved on and I have to do other work, so a video on this… perhaps not today.

So I tried to do another #LinuxAudio / #MusicProduction video for @atkwap today. I was focusing on #DecentSampler. Recently I was having quite some fun exploring sample packages.

Then I had a Mixbus crash, or crash of some plugins, I don't know.

Reloading, I found that #Mixbus will crash every time it has to load a project with multiple instances of Decent Sampler.

I'm filing a bug. Because as it is, it is UselessSampler.

Currently, I'm not willing to deal with more than one bug a day, which includes answering questions or providing files regarding filed tickets.

EDIT: apparently it works when using the dynamically linked version instead of the static built.

Me and #RubiaTheCat spent most of this fine #Caturday figuring out how to make an instrument for @dhilowitz's excellent #DecentSampler plugin.

For a first attempt we sampled the #vibraphone patch on my 40-year-old #Casio Casiotone MT-70 synth.

It'd be lovely if someone who uses DecentSampler could give it a test run and send feedback my way!
