" #Senate #Democrats attempted to expedite passage of a bill that would provide a binding #CodeOfEthics for the #SupremeCourt, but the effort was scuttled by #Republicans...

#Leo said in a statement in November after the subpoenas were issued that he “will not cooperate with this unlawful campaign of political retribution.”

Durbin’s office said the #Judiciary Committee’s broader investigation of Supreme Court #ethics is ongoing."

The Washington Post · New documents show unreported trips by Justice Clarence ThomasBy Justin Jouvenal

"Props to the justices for signing onto a thing, even if it’s an old thing recast as a new thing, principally drafted with the intention of instructing us that they still can’t be made to do anything...

But insofar as it’s phrased to imply, perhaps for the first time since this #ethics mess began, that the court is aware of public opinion, it’s a tiptoe in the right direction."

"If there is a lesson, still, to be learned from the #ethical revelations of the past year... it is that newsgathering matters—that when the justices are left to their own ethical devices, #misconduct happens, it goes ignored by the other #justices, and it becomes weaponized by wealthy entities seeking to alter outcomes in cases, such that an entire infrastructure of #corruption goes undetected for years"

"The U.S. #SupremeCourt issued a #CodeOfEthics ... following months of financial scandals tied to Justices #SamuelAlito & #ClarenceThomas

The #nonbinding code of conduct...

immediately apparent is the lack of an #enforcement mechanism...

...the financial guidelines, which allow justices to fundraise for law-related nonprofits, calling it “a hall pass for the #FederalistSociety galas and #Koch Network 501c3 & 501c4 [organizations] ”

"The code does NOT [emphasis mine] spell out any enforcement mechanism. It does NOT lay out an oversight process and it remains unclear WHO, IF ANYONE, would determine whether a justice violated a part of the code. Nevertheless, some observers described the creation of an explicit, written code as a landmark in the court’s history."

@rbreich

You left out paying for Clarence Thomas' mother's house (and upgrades for that house) as well as paying for the fancy education of a boy Thomas views as a son. As well as various other favors done for Thomas and his family/friends.

@ProPublica has published several informative articles about how various billionaires with the aid of Leonard Leo have corrupted Clarence Thomas. (And of course, Thomas was very willing to be corrupted.)

#SCOTUS needs a #CodeOfEthics

The #ACM #CodeOfEthics reads:

"""Computing professionals should therefore credit the creators of ideas, inventions, work, and artifacts, and respect copyrights, patents, trade secrets, license agreements, and other methods of protecting authors' works"""

I don't see how this is confusing for companies like #OpenAI, but here we are.
