Hoe ziet onze wereld eruit over tien jaar? Sandra Phlippen is hoofdeconoom bij ABN AMRO en ontfermt zich met een team van ‘superspecialisten’ over toekomstscenario’s. Met angst en beven kijken we naar de toekomst: wat komt er allemaal op ons af? Klimaatproblemen, voedselschaarste, waterschaarste, geopolitieke aardverschuivingen, geweld, vluchtelingenstromen, verval van de democratie – en wie weet wat nog meer. Hoe ziet onze toekomst eruit?
Ik ga verhaal halen op een plek die misschien niet voor de hand ligt: de ABN AMRO bank. Daar werkt Sandra Phlippen als hoofdeconoom. Zij leidt het Economisch Bureau, een team van 24 specialisten die op grond van data toekomstverwachtingen ontwikkelen, oftewel ‘scenario’s’. Bijvoorbeeld over de verschuivingen in de geopolitiek, over de verhoudingen tussen Europa en China, of de desastreuze gevolgen van klimaatontwrichting voor de economie. Phlippen is iemand die opvallende keuzes maakt: zo ongeveer om de vijf jaar zegt ze haar baan op. Ze was al eens chef Economie bij het AD, schrijft een column voor Financieel Dagblad, en is sinds 2023 bijzonder hoogleraar Duurzaam Bankieren in Groningen. En nu dus ‘Hoofd Scenarioschrijven’ bij de bank. Heeft ze talent voor drama?
