Online #permacomputing workshop announcement: On Wednesday 6 August, join me for the final "Permacomputing for #Wilderland" workshop on making smol websites!
https://remote.wilderland.ie/events/permacomputing-august-small-websites.html
"From considerations of content management tools, to content export, static site generators, external resources, lightweight media and hosting methods, we'll look at tools to analyse website content (using browser inspector tools), figure out what they require (using traceroute), how to build small websites, and ideas of how to reduce the weight of existing websites."
This is the last of a three-part workshop series, the first looked at small-scale power generation, the second considered how to repurpose portable devices (for web hosting and more) and this final one is about #smolweb. See you on the 6th! Please do
#thought about #permacomputing - why is there a focus on something like 8bit computers when the #amiga was for example a human understandable computer (https://www.retro-commodore.eu/2024/04/22/amiga-hardware-reference-manual-2/) ? wouldn't it be better to focus on something like a (fpga or custom build) amiga with aros as operating system (or a simpler amiga dos like os) instead of a basic 8bit like system?
I've been invited to talk about #permacomputing at Critical Signals next month! I'll try to introduce some of the ideas that I find most interesting via practical examples. Save the date!

Once again having #PermaComputing thoughts and also feeling the frustration of just how much friction and sacrifice it would involve. I’m still hoping that if I think about it hard enough, I’ll find the right way in, and the right balance
Long, cool idea, solarpunk
After the Code of Conduct and the Mediation process, the Cooperative Development Guidelines now have a Governance Document that can be used by any Organization/Foundation/Collective/Community/Project that wants to have a governance based on participatory, equity and permacomputing/accessibility principles.
Its time for us to finally start building participatory digital commons, that are developed by the community and for the community and the Governance document is part 1 of doing just that. (Decision making and Structure will follow after this).
I am also excited to announce that @queerspark has also been listed as a collective that adopted pieces of the Cooperative Development Guidelines.
Most of my work is informed by field research on the use of everyday technologies under extraordinary circumstances. ... I am currently working on the development of anarchist technologies for the Rojava Revolution in North-East Syria (more info on my Telegram channel: @rojavatech).
Heads up #PermaComputing Berlin friends. Our next Meet-Up is approaching:

Artist and Designer Chaline Bang will talk about her personal adventures and collective experiments in permacomputing. She is a member of the Rotterdam-based research group _permacomputing evenings_ and will share how they learned to build servers out of obsolete smartphones using postmarketOS. The group conducted experiments into practical techniques and aesthetic approaches as well as organizing public events with outside researchers.

I think that’s one of the biggest issues today – when you can just throw more cloud at it, there’s no incentive to code for efficiency or bandwidth or resiliency
(and the ones who do – like #permacomputing – get laughed at as Luddites or anti-progress)
Thanks to a book recommendation by @bert_hubert [1], I went on a tangent learning more about the absolutely fascinating history and workings of core memory (and core rope memory, its read-only version). Some of this also very interesting for #PermaComputing and giving me ideas for future art projects...

hi #permacomputers, #hackers, #bricoleurs
Starting to tinker with old/disused smartphones to self-host. However, upon buying a couple second-hand phones, I'm often faced with Google's FRP protection: you can only use the phone by connecting to the previous owner's google account. Factory reset doesn't solve this.
Do you have any trustworthy resources on bypassing this? terminal tools? forums?
Seems essentials to increase phone's lifespan.
thankssss

Upcoming #permacomputing meeting (edition 3) in #vienna!
- Tuesday, July 15th 19:00
- This time we'll meet outside at Auer-Welsbach-Park (close by Schönbrunn)
- "Batteries included!" (scnr) because ... our topic will be batteries: Building open source batteries, batteries and the energy transition, lithium mining, ethical ramifications, and so on.
Anyone interested in the topic of http://permacomputing.net/ is very welcome, whether you're just curious or already a seasoned permacomputer, we're glad to have you! :)
Exact meeting spot in the park is still tbd, but our batterista of the evening @Ansimorph will be able to supply it at some point between now and the meeting itself, so keep an eye out for that (I'll relay it too then).
