I don't know why #officers from NSRAPT (Norfolk and Suffolk #Roads and Armed #Policing Team) stopped the #recumbent #tricycle - its perfectly legal to ride it on the roads, and one of a pair owned and regularly ridden by a middle aged man in #Ipswich. Perhaps they wanted to check it wasn't motorised, and this is a show of strength and warning to those with #ebikes that could be operating beyond the legal limits?

This morning's bike ride didn't take me far from the city, but it did include some narrow cycle-paths for which a two-wheeler is the only option. There were a lot of wet leaves about so I was super cautious on the corners.

And then after I'd successfully got around all the leaves and the muddy tracks without any bother at all I managed to fall from my bike (for the first time in at least a decade) due to a ridge on a charity shop's driveway. No harm done. I didn't have far to fall from my recumbent and it happened at about 5 km/h.

Was about 3 miles from home when the mount for my display housing broke. Only means of “repair” I had was to bungie the housing to the boom, which prevented me from being able to pedal. Thankfully, my ebike has a throttle, and the hub motor let me get home without using the drivetrain.

Made it home, where I’m now reinforcing the mount so that I can print a new one that won’t break in the same way.

Also, there’s the geometry thing. Flat pedals on a #recumbent bike are annoying because you have to consciously keep your foot on them, which means you can’t really develop the habit of resting your foot there. Clipless actually save you work by allowing you to relax more. Which is such a game changer.

Again, though, my experience with clipless on an upright is that they mostly just keep my feet in the optimal spot, but that’s about it.

I think the reason why clipless pedals are so much better on ‘bents is because on a #recumbent, you’re applying power when your foot is horizontal. Which means that in the “upstroke” portion of the pedal cycle, you’re not actually fighting gravity. Which makes it much easier to apply power pulling up towards you.

On an upright, you are fighting gravity during the upstroke portion of the cycle, which makes it much harder to get power out of it.

There’s also probably a habit thing. I’m still forming riding habits on my #recumbent. Whereas I had long since developed the bad habit of resting my foot on the pedal during the upstroke. Which made it hard for me to break that habit when I learned it wasn’t a thing I should be doing (which I didn’t learn until I was 20), as well as when I used clipless (23-27). I still haven’t broken that habit on an upright, and I have to consciously remember to lift my off-foot.

Wow, I was wrong. On a #recumbent clipless pedals massively improve your power output. Maybe it doesn’t double your power, but it’s noticeable and significant.

My first time using clipless on my ‘bent was a few days ago, and I immediately noticed the difference as it was much easier for me to go fast. The next day, I went on another ride where I remembered the clipless shoes, and, again, it felt much easier to apply power.

Yesterday, I took the #recumbent for a ride, only I forgot to change into cycling shoes.

I realized my mistake within half a mile (~0.8 km). I was wondering why, even though it was a relatively calm day, I was struggling so much with this. Then I noticed I had forgotten to change shoes. 🤦🏽‍♀️

This particular ride was only a few miles long, so I just tougher it out until it was done.

A thread on clipless pedals and recumbent bikes:

I was told this when I first got my ‘bent, but clipless pedals are really helpful on a #recumbent. In my opinion, much more than on an upright.

On an upright bike, I never really noticed the difference in power between clipless and flat pedals. Sure, they placed my feet in the right position, but difference in speed/power output was basically minimal for me (a decent rider - I have an FTP around 150 +/- 40 watts).
