Greenstone projectile point identified from the Overseer's House site.
A small number of #ProjectilePoints have been recovered this season, (including those crafted of quartz, flint, and greenstone) revealing how much of Montpelier's #landscape was integral to life in the #Manahoac and #Monacan nations before #colonization.

This 18th-century chess set was added to the decorative art collection after Montpelier's #archaeology team uncovered tiny fragments of similar #chess pawns in the South Yard.

They closely match pawns from types of sets sold during ca. 1780-1810, including this ‘Washington Pattern” set (named because George Washington owned one!)

An enslaved worker at Montpelier left his or her fingerprints on this brick.
The small size of fingerprints typically found on bricks suggests that women or children were among the enslaved brickmakers.
A number on the brick shows that it was the end of a day’s run.

Here's another #reintroduction #introduction, since I'm migrating from octodon.social over here to hcommons.social!

I'm Jolene! I'm an archaeologist by training who wrangles data in the public sector. I lead our #archives, #databases, & #gis. I'm an ad-hoc technologist. I like questions, collaboration, data, maps, charts, graphs, patterns, jokes, sewing, biking, context, equity, dignity. I hate hashtags, but I guess I'll have to get over that.

I was an early adopter here (2017 although I just migrated instances), but only an infrequent participant. My gratitude goes out to the OG fediverse. I like it here!

Trying to decide what to create here, but I'm definitely not trying to reproduce a birdsite experience. Going to try to post things that are helpful/interesting.
