@Natanox haha, personal choices! 😅

Personally, i'm allergic to anything-Suse, because my 1st employer MADE ME deal with #Suse …i guess, it was a #MadeInGermany kinda thing …despite me having extensive experience in doing it the #Debian way …i'd never dealt with #YAST before …where d'fuq are my conf files …i can't configure #Apache, using YAST! …i muddled through, eventually. 😅 *sigh*

edit: that happened over 10 years ago - funny enough, they just dropped YaST, it seems 🤣

So, YaST is really riding off into the sunset. Tried to find a proper familiar metaphor, but there isn't one. #YaST made #Linux accessible to non terminal savvy people for decades now, being a true avangarda back in the day. This is really a new era for #openSUSE

@chesheer Personally I love #YaST and much prefer it over editing text files or doing advanced things in the terminal. It's advanced and pretty intuitive. I don't use it much but I love knowing it's there for me, and it was the major reason I went with #OpenSuse. Having to do local things in a web browser (Cockpit) just seems wrong to me and it'll probably mean I'll forget the tool is even there. But time will tell I guess.

Why make a new Linux installer?

* Anaconda is badly designed, bulky and has a very poor UX for both unattended installs (using Kickstart) and normal user installs. It is written in Python in an aging codebase, ported from Python 2 to 3, and has lots of legacy code from the 90s since the inception of the original Red Hat Linux. It also relies on the aging DNF 3 library, which will be replaced by DNF 5 in the near future.

* YaST is designed for SUSE and SUSE only, it also suffers from the same issues as Anaconda, with an extremely large and complex codebase for simply being a wrapper for various system utilities.

* Calamares' support for Fedora is very hacky, as it is simply a barebones installer framework. It also has issues with BTRFS installs and does not support our desired features such as homed.

Quote from a #SUSE blog post about Systems Management with SLES 16:

"'#YaST in maintenance mode

With the development of #SLES 16, SUSE is putting YaST into maintenance mode. The installation and configuration tool YaST will continue to be fully supported as part of SLES 15. For SLES 16, some of YaST’s components are used as base of Agama, YaST as a tool is replaced by #Agama, #Cockpit and #Ansible."'
