Has there ever been a better lyricist than the late Shane MacGowan? On St. Patrick's Day, LitHub's Ed Simon pays tribute to Ireland's punk poet.

Boosting this again because it’s the most life and art affirming thing I’ve seen in a long time. Happy Christmas! #ShaneMacGowan #irish
This song has spoken to thousands of people. I am not special for it filling my heart with glee, anger, and/or sorrow, depending on my mood.
But this version is a joyous celebration of a man who could wring all of those emotions from me with the purity of his voice, and a reminder that his gift was bringing all of that- and so much more- to us, despite (and in spite of) his personal trials & tribulations.
PLAY IT LOUD. RIP, Shane.
This is wonderful from Shane’s funeral earlier today. So joyous! Rest easy, Shane. #ShaneMacGowan https://youtu.be/2PM3uCShlk4?si=qkoZHxme08I6RpVs #FairytaleofNewYork #Christmas
I've been watching the funeral for #ShaneMacGowan for the past hour or so.
What a beautiful tribute to an amazing man.
I didn't realise just how much #ThePogues meant to me in my late teenage years until this week. Rum, Sodomy and the Lash was the sound of my 6th form. Seeing them play with some of my mates back then is an experience which none of us will ever forget. The energy from both the band and audience was incredible.
Shane MacGowan funeral procession to pass through the streets of Dublin so people can pay their respects. The procession will apparently end just off Fenian Street - which seems appropriate.

Shane MacGowan & Bruce Foxton of The Jam in a great snap, London 1977.
@historyofpunkrock Interesting 'white label' semi-bootleg release of Shane MacGowan's pre-#Pogues band *The Nips* from 1980. Plain white cardboard cover with a stuck-on b&w insert, in typical #bootleg style. Features the legendary 'King of the Bop' on side one - perhaps the first really cracking song that Shane ever wrote. A cross between #punk and #rockabilly.
I bought this in 'Rock On' in London's Camden Town. Three quid and seventy-five pence, at the time. @vinylrecords
A bargain.
Stewart Maconie on Shane MacGowan:
"I interviewed him once, with Nick Cave, for an NME cover story. One of the most difficult afternoon's of my life."
@ljaesch “It was Christmas Eve, babe, in the drunk tank
An old man said to me, "Won't see another one"
And then he sang a song, 'The Rare Old Mountain Dew'
I turned my face away and dreamed about you”
I felt sad when I heard that Shane MacGowan had died yesterday. I wouldn’t describe myself as a fan, but Shane’s someone who’s always been around my musical landscape.
I like punk and I like folk, so The Pogues’s music spoke to me. I never bought their records, or went to their concerts, but I would turn them up if they came on the radio. An imperfect but charismatic voice, spinning poetic yarns about the darker side of everyday life.
Looking through the photos of his life, it’s easy to see why I liked him, his roguish character jumps out of the photo at you. The person you’d wish you could hang out with at the pub. Mostly photographed with a cigarette and / or drink in hand, he personifies the self-destructive star my generation has been trained to admire.
Would we have still loved Shane without the self-destruction? Could Shane have lived his life any other way? I guess we’ll never know, but the awe that I bestowed stars that self-destruct is flaking away as I get older. What once seemed cool, now looks sad.

Streets of Sorrow/Birmingham 6 by #ThePogues (w. Terry Wood & #ShaneMacGowan, 1988).
Banned from broadcast by the Independent Broadcasting Authority who claimed it alleged that "convicted terrorists are not guilty, the Irish people were put at a disadvantage in the courts of the United Kingdom and that it may have invited support for a terrorist organisation such as the IRA".
Imagine. Over the next 3 years the Guildford 4 and Birmingham 6’s convictions were all quashed.
