"The #Norwegian parliament has apologised unreservedly to minority groups and #Indigenous people for more than a century of historical injustices committed against them as part of its “Norwegianisation” policy."

“Today I send thoughts to those who have suffered, who lost both language and culture, and who have deep wounds. Today there is hope for reconciliation.”

What happens to the world if #forests stop absorbing #carbon? Ask #Finland

#NaturalSinks of forests and #peat were key to Finland’s ambitious target to be #CarbonNeutral by 2035. But now, the land has started emitting more #GreenhouseGases than it stores

"The number of dying trees also increased in recent years as forests are stressed by #drought and high temperatures. In south-east Finland, the number of dying trees has risen rapidly, increasing 788% in just six years between 2017 and 2023, and the amount of standing deadwood – decaying trees – is up by about 900%."

"Tiina Sanila-Aikio cannot remember a summer this warm. The months of midnight sun around #Inari, in Finnish Lapland, have been hot and dry. Conifer needles on the branch-tips are orange when they should be a deep green. The moss on the forest floor, usually swollen with water, has withered.

"'I have spoken with many old #ReindeerHerders who have never experienced the heat that we’ve had this summer. The sun keeps shining and it never rains,' says Sanila-Aikio, former president of the #FinnishSami parliament.

"The #BorealForests here in the #Sami homeland take so long to grow that even small, stunted trees are often hundreds of years old. It is part of the #Taiga – meaning “land of the little sticks” in Russian – that stretches around the far northern hemisphere through #Siberia, #Scandinavia, #Alaska and #Canada.

"It is these forests that helped underpin the credibility of the most ambitious carbon-neutrality target in the developed world: Finland’s commitment to be #CarbonNeutral by 2035.

"The law, which came into force two years ago, means the country is aiming to reach the target 15 years earlier than many of its EU counterparts.

"In a country of 5.6 million people with nearly 70% covered by forests and peatlands, many assumed the plan would not be a problem.

"For decades, the country’s forests and peatlands had reliably removed more carbon from the atmosphere than they released. But from about 2010, the amount the land absorbed started to decline, slowly at first, then rapidly. By 2018, Finland’s land sink – the phrase scientists use to describe something that absorbs more carbon than it releases – had vanished."

‘They want total control’: how #Russia is forcing Sami people to hide their identity

#Sami people in Russia are being forced to hide their identity and live “outside the law” for fear of imprisonment and persecution, leading figures from the community have warned, after the #Russian government labelled dozens of #Indigenous organisations #terrorists and #extremists.

Mikael the #Sami Culture Tourism Host collected us in his boat and drove us 10 km of the way down to Ammarnäs. He bought the boat 20 years ago from a builder in northern Finland and spends a week every year tarring it. It is clinkered Scots pinewood, seats six rowers and is indistinguishable from a Vendel & Valsgärde boat except for the little transom, Sv. akterspegel.

#UnitedNations: #Australian #Aboriginal children seized, '#GreenEnergy' impacts worsen for #Sami

by #BrendaNorrell, #CensoredNews, July 9, 2024

"Australian Aboriginal continue to be seized from their families by the government, and the situation for Sami in Norway is worsening because of 'green energy' projects, Indigenous representatives told the United Nations Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples today.

"Both #Norway and #Australia had country engagements with the UN Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, but Australian Aboriginal representatives said conditions are not improving.

"During today's session, the second day in the week-long session, Sami told the U.N. that conditions in Norway are worsening for Sami, because their land is being seized for 'green energy' projects, including wind energy projects.
Sami stated that #ClimateChange is drastic in the #Arctic in Norway, far worse than in other regions, and that #FossilFuel industries continue to destroy Sami lands.

"Free, prior and informed #consent, as stated in the U.N. Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (#UNDRIP), is not being honored in regards to Sami reindeer herders by the government of Norway.

"The U.N. Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples engaged in a country visit to Norway in March. Consultation, #EnergyLaw, and Norway's new #MineralAct, were among the topics.

"A representative from #Africa, responding to the report, said the impacts of green energy on Sami shows that the exploitation of Indigenous Peoples for green energy projects is a global issue. While #IndigenousLands are being seized for minerals, the minerals and products are usually exported, and are not of benefit to Indigenous Peoples whose land the minerals are taken from.

"Sami in #Finland said the government of Finland is violating the rights of Sami by failing to recognize Sami people.

"A Native representative told the U.N. that their Native hunting and fishing rights continue to be violated by the government of Canada.

"On Monday, Indigenous described how the murder of Indigenous Peoples continues in #Colombia, and there has been no relief from the violence from armed groups."

»Komiksowe zapowiedzi na lipiec’24«

Powiedzieć, że koniec czerwca był gorący, to nic nie powiedzieć. W takich warunkach chęć do aktywności, przynajmniej za dnia, spada niemal do zera, a człowieka zaczyna rozumieć ludzi mieszkających w klimatach śródziemnomorskich, ceniących sjestę. W każdym razie, na wakacyjne wyjazdy (lub popołudnia po pracy) warto zaopatrzyć się w jakieś lektury. Dla wszystkich miłośników gatunku fantasy oraz/lub science-fiction polecamy...

"As for the wind farms, the #Sámi already fought and won their case in court in 2021 [AND YET THAT OUTCOME IS BEING IGNORED!], thirteen years after they first began advocating against the wind farms’ construction. Ironically, the government set up a #TruthAndReconciliation Commission in 2018, not only to investigate the state’s assimilation policy and its consequences, but also to establish measures promoting greater equality for minorities in Norway. The investigation is soon to be published.

"When it came to removing the wind turbines, Sámi people have had to resort to civil disobedience to get the government’s attention. On February 23, protesters occupied the reception area of the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy and blocked the entrances of several other government departments across Oslo.

“'#IndigenousRights are #HumanRights. You can’t weigh them against anything else,' says sixteen-year-old Jostein Tennø Loe, a socialist youth board representative. He was among the first activists to be arrested outside the Ministry of Finance. As they were carried away, passersby could hear the sound of #joik, the traditional Sámi singing once suppressed by the government’s #assimilation efforts. 'When #Norway, as a democratic state, ignores human rights and ignores the supreme court five hundred days after the ruling, something is deeply wrong,' Jostein says. For the Sámi, who are no strangers to conflict over land, the court’s ruling in their favor came a century too late — but the five hundred days that followed were nothing but a slap in the face.

"Not only is #ReindeerHerding a significant part of their culture — it’s also a crucial arena for the Sámi people of #Fosen to practice their language. Considering that the Norwegian government is single-handedly responsible for pushing the language to the brink of extinction, the prime minister’s lack of remorse was damning."
