Bought a used #Kensington #Orbit #Trackball with Scroll Ring a couple of years ago for testing instead of using a classic computer #mouse because the surface of my Microsoft #Intellimouse Optical from ~2000(!) finally went goo: reddit.com/r/nostalgia/comment

#OrbitTrackball: Love at first use. And it's #ergonomic and not wireless. 👍

Unfortunately, this week one of its buttons started to act weird so I just bought a new one as a replacement.

I can totally recommend that thing.

#Emacs #UOMF: Linking Headings
karl-voit.at/2019/11/16/UOMF-L

I found an interesting link I added: if you're using a different method (using out of the box functionality) to link #orgmode headings, you might need to use this really tedious repair mechanism because links get broken all the time. 😲

Well, I'm glad I have found my way around that already, not having broken links in the first place. 🙄

The Advantages of #Text-Based #Information Versus #Videos, #Audio or #Images
karl-voit.at/2022/01/08/text-v

I just published a comment by mizu where he refers to an interesting video from 1994: "maybe in the future #pharmacies and #bookstores will be the same since people will be so lazy to read the contents of a book that they will want to get the contents of the #books from something that they can digest easily, in the form of pills (or injections)."

@amoroso @lproven Well, I can think of many ways how to improve #computers. 😉

Once you've got rid of #filenames, #folders, #applications, ... you will find much room for coming up with something fundamental new. This
time without adapting humans for the computer but the otherwise round: creating the ultimate digital tool for the humans.

This can never be reached by an evolutionary process like suggested in the article.

I disagree with the judgment that we tried hard.

There's no incentive for a revolution. No one is able to start this process. We're pretty much stuck. 🫩

This is not the top of the IT industry. We're still in its stone age and made a situation where any fundamental change is a downside somehow. A local optimum but never ever the global one, if you like.

@Dirk_OWL @thomas_mathoi (I'll stick to English as others might be interested as well.)

How much time do you have? 😉

First, it doesn't matter what I'm using. It only depends on your requirements: karl-voit.at/2021/01/18/tool-c

Then, #Markdown is too fragmented to be a sane long-term choice (data loss, migration effort). It's complicated. I'll blog about that in the upcoming weeks. Follow my blog feed for this update.

Furthermore, #Obsidian is closed source. So it can be gone any moment. It easily introduces further proprietary MD extensions as well. I´d not invest time/effort in such a hyped thing. It'll be history like so many other hyped services of the past.

I do have a lecture about #PIM at #TUGraz if you're interested: karl-voit.at/pim-lecture-tug/

@thomas_mathoi Das wäre eine Wette auf die Zukunft. 😉

derstandard.at/story/300000027

@GrapheneOS is one of the very few (maybe the only!) platforms that do provide excellent default protection against megacorp #espionage and even state actors like #trojanhorses and border espionage by rogue states like #USA, #China, #Russia, ...

One of the few systems that isn't hackable by #Palantir and other bad actors.

If you do want protection, do yourself a favor and switch to #GrapheneOS using a (cheap/used/older) #Pixel phone. Recommended: Pixel 8 or newer.

Setup (flashing) is basically connecting your phone via a proper USB-C cable to another Android device and pressing a few buttons in the web browser: youtube.com/watch?v=L1KZWjZVnA + grapheneos.org/install/web 👍

Please do setup a monthly bank transfer of just a few bucks if you want to fund their effort: grapheneos.org/donate (they really do have many donating options!)

They're currently porting #Android16 which should be available soon.

CEO von #Google Deepmind will #EMails abschaffen und alle Krankheiten heilen
derstandard.at/story/300000027

karl-voit.at/pim-lecture-tug/
karl-voit.at/tags/emails/

@Vivaldi From a scientific point of view (AFAIR) most people won't use web bookmarks any more.

From those who do, you can distinct three rough categories: filer (the ones with a folder hierarchy), piler (one folder or chaos) and spring cleaner (piler that do delete/file after a while).

Related to filers, you may be interested in the work
of Boardman et al who did some research with common folder hierarchies for emails, files, bookmarks and such probably 20 years ago.

#pkm#pim#myth

Half of a century of sleeping, drinking, eating, crying, laughing, shitting, learning, thinking, wondering, sporting, reading, cycling, travelling, ... and I still burn for a lot of things like this here with you - the web of humans in the Fediverse.

I still care for #PIM topics. I still have (too many) plans for projects I want to do. I still want to try out new ways of tinkering with tools/workflows/ideas and teaching PIM topics when I think that I did find out something worth knowing.

Although I sometimes seem to lose connection to or understanding of the younger generations, I got the impression that my topics still do reach interested people. I can not help it anyway. 😆

Half of a century - amazing when I think of it. Somehow, it seems so surreal to me.
