The Native American activist, persecuted by the US state.</p><p>In 1977, Peltier was wrongfully convicted of aiding and abetting the killing of two FBI agents in Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, South Dakota. The evidence used to convict Peltier was very controversial, and his trial was ripe with irregularities. Many believe his imprisonment is retribution for his leadership in the Native American <a href="https://jorts.horse/tags/liberation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>liberation</span></a> movement.</p>

Moments before leaving office, President Joe Biden commuted the life sentence of Indigenous activist #Leonard #Peltier, who was convicted in the 1975 killings of two FBI agents.
Peltier was denied parole as recently as July and wasn’t eligible for parole again until 2026. He was serving life in prison for the deaths of the agents during a standoff on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.
He will transition to home confinement, Biden said in a statement.
Bureau of Prisons spokesperson Emery Nelson said after Biden’s commutation that Peltier remained incarcerated Monday at USP Coleman, a high-security prison in Florida.
The fight for Peltier’s freedom is entangled with the Indigenous rights movements.
Nearly half a century later, his name remains a rallying cry.
An enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa in North Dakota, Peltier was active in the American Indian Movement,
which began in the 1960s as a local organization in Minneapolis that grappled with issues of police brutality and discrimination against Native Americans. It quickly became a national force.
The movement grabbed headlines in 1973 when it took over the village of Wounded Knee on Pine Ridge
— the Oglala Lakota Nation’s reservation
— leading to a 71-day standoff with federal agents.
Tensions between the movement and the government remained high for years.
On June 26, 1975, agents went to Pine Ridge to serve arrest warrants amid battles over Native treaty rights and self-determination.
After being injured in a shootout, agents Jack Coler and Ronald Williams were shot in the head at close range, the FBI said.
American Indian Movement member Joseph Stuntz was also killed in the shootout.
Two other movement members and Peltier’s co-defendants, Robert Robideau and Dino Butler, were acquitted of killing Coler and Williams.
After fleeing to Canada and being extradited to the United States, Peltier was convicted of two counts of first-degree murder and was sentenced in 1977 to life in prison, despite defense claims that evidence against him had been falsified.
Biden’s action Monday followed decades of lobbying and protests on Peltier’s behalf by Native American leaders, human rights activists, liberal lawmakers and celebrities who maintain he was wrongfully convicted.
Amnesty International has long considered Peltier a political prisoner.
Advocates for his release have included Archbishop Desmond Tutu, civil rights icon Coretta Scott King, actor and director Robert Redford and musicians Pete Seeger, Harry Belafonte and Jackson Browne.

4) Passing the U.S. Truth & Healing Commission Bill to ensure continued funding and support for the relatives who survived boarding schools. The Truth and Healing Commission on Indian Boarding School Policies Act will establish a formal commission to investigate and document these policies. This includes the federal government’s attempted termination of cultures, religions, and languages of Indigenous peoples, forced assimilation practices, and human rights violations that occurred as a result of Indian Boarding School Policies. The commission is intended to develop recommendations for the federal government to acknowledge and heal the ongoing historical and intergenerational trauma passed down in Native families and communities and provide a forum for survivors to speak about these human rights violations.
5) Conduct a full-scale investigation into the failure of the Tuba City Boarding School system. The Bureau of Indian Education must take responsibility for investigating and addressing the egregious misconduct at this and other boarding schools. Reform is urgently needed to ensure the safety of Indigenous children in BIE-run schools across the country.
While these aren’t the only solutions, we believe these are critical steps toward accountability and community healing due to the historic and ongoing harm inflicted on Indigenous peoples due to colonization, the boarding school era, and forced relocation by the U.S. government.

Der American Indian Movement (A.I.M.) Aktivist Leonard Peltier befand sich 1975 in der Pine Ridge Reservation, um die Bevölkerung gegen den derzeitigen Terror der dortigen Paramiliz zu unterstützen und wurde unter konstruierten Vorwürfen für einen angeblichen Mord am 6. Februar 1976 verhaftet und kurz darauf ohne stichhaltige Beweise verurteilt. Er wird seit inzwischen 48 Jahren als politischer Gefangener in verschiedenen US-amerikanischen Hochsicherheitsgefängnissen festgehalten.
Seine Verhaftung und die Repression gegen A.I.M. waren Teil des sogenannten #COINTELPRO Programmes der US-Bundespolizei FBI, die die Zersetzung und Zerschlagung der damals starken #Protestbewegungen (u.a. auch der #BlackPantherParty) mit geheimdienstlichen und damals noch illegalen Mitteln betrieb.
Leonard Peltiers Verurteilung zu zwei Mal lebenslänglicher Haft war nur in Folge der Bedrohung mehrerer Zeug*innen, welche ihre Aussagen später widerriefen, massiver Beeinflussung der Geschworenen und erfundener, heute als falsch nachgewiesener Beweise möglich.
Leonard Peltier hat mittlerweile eine längere Zeit seines Lebens hinter Gittern verbracht als in Freiheit. Er leidet seit etlichen Jahren unter teils schwerwiegenden Erkrankungen, darunter Zahn- und Kieferproblemen, #Diabetes, #Bluthochdruck, einem #Aneurysma (was durch eine Operation behoben werden könnte und seit Jahren verweigert wird) und einem rasch nachlassenden Sehvermögen. 2017 musste er sich einer schwierigen #Herz-OP unterziehen und 2022 überlebte er eine #Covid-Erkrankung. Er hat kaum noch Kraft in den Armen und benötigt eine #Gehhilfe, sowie ein Gerät zur #Atemunterstützung. Eine adäquate medizinische Behandlung existiert nicht. Seine Situation ist seit vielen Jahren mehr als alarmierend und vor allem lebensbedrohlich!
Am 2. Juli 2024 lehnte die föderale #Bewährungskommission eine #Haftentlassung von Leonard Peltier nach über 48 (!) Jahren #Gefangenschaft ab. Peltier hatte 15 Jahre auf den Termin zur #Bewährungsanhörung warten müssen. Die Kommission verweigerte fast allen seinen Unterstützer*innen für ihn zu sprechen. Unter den Ausgeschlossenen war sogar ein an seinem Verfahren beteiligter ehemaliger #Staatsanwalt, der Peltiers #Verurteilung inzwischen als großen Fehler ansieht. Gehört wurden jedoch wieder nur die uralten #Falschbehauptungen der #Bundespolizei FBI. In Anbetracht seiner gesundheitlichen Situation und in Kombination mit der medizinischen Nicht-Behandlung, ist die Ablehnung der Bewährung eine „Todesstrafe mit anderen Mitteln“, welche das #FBI in ihrem Rachefeldzug verfolgt.
Das nur wenige Monate vor seinem 80. Geburtstag am 12. September. Trotz der #Isolation und der widrigen Umstände hat Leonard #Peltier nicht aufgegeben und kämpft weiter!
Wir fordern Leonard Peltiers Freilassung sowie das Selbstbestimmungsrecht und die umfassende Entschädigung der amerikanischen Ureinwohner*innen!

Given that he’s spent nearly 50 years in prison, and considering his age and ongoing, chronic health issues, granting parole to Mr. Peltier serves both the interests of justice and mercy.
