Went out for a hike after a day of horrendous wind. The clouds were lifting.

I painted this entirely from my memory; I saw this tree, just barely turning colors, an early morning last October in Zion. I thought I took a photo of it, but I couldn't find it. It is liberating to paint something from imagination and memory.

Another long, tall painting! Based on a photo of @NevadaWolf , with permission. The curled back neck was very difficult to express. More work needed but I'm pretty happy with it, as I rarely paint animals...  Limited edition prints are available.

This is an old piece from 2020, titled “Forgotten.” I had it pinned on the wall in my studio because I didn’t want to file it away. Put it back on easel, lightened it and added highlights, and now it’s framed. Will take it to next month’s show.

It's the season for baby birds so here is a fluffy duckling in soft pastels that I did a few years ago. I enjoy the challenge of trying to capture the sweetness and innocence in the faces of young animals.

It's a view near Air Sailing Glider Port in Reno, NV. When I paint using a reference photo (like this one) I try to put away the photo when it's 70% done. I just finish so the painting "works."

I don't attempt many sea or landscapes in soft pastel although I would like to find time to practice them more often. I did do this piece called 'Atlantic Wave' back in 2018 and was pleased with how it turned out. I feel it captures the energy but also the delicacy of the ocean wave.

My pastel work this week is a portrait of a West Highland White terrier. I love the cute floppy ear on this particular dog. It gives him character.

April 27 is #InternationalCrowAndRavenAppreciationDay so here's a distinguished looking crow that I did in soft pastels last year. The bird has an autumn theme and interesting purple accents.
