Great work done by the lovely volunteers who came out last week to plant at Tayport Common saltmarsh. Over the two days we planted out 1200 plants to help stop erosion, build saltmarsh habitat and store carbon.

Field work recently took us up to the beautiful Dornoch Firth.
Fencing is now in place to extend protection to existing saltmarsh and areas to be planted.
The Dornoch site was the original site to trial fencing as a successful method to support saltmarsh plantings establish and prevent further erosion of vulnerable sites.

And again, for a saving of £30,00 a year (approx) due diligence on bats (endangered in Scoptland) will be watered down. Note - no redundancies amongst senior staff!

We're looking forward to getting more sites planted, continuing our monitoring program, growing more plants and working with more volunteers.

This is what we love to see, taken on the Dornoch firth this summer, the previously eroded saltmarsh edge is recovering and extending seaward.
Saltmarsh is very effective at protecting against coastal erosion when it is healthy and of a sufficient size to buffer the energy of the incoming waves.

Lovely visit from the University of St Andrews "VIP: Looking after Eden" students today. They got to see the Plant hub where we propagate plants and some of the physical defenses in place on the mudflats to protect the fragmented saltmarsh and new planting sites, as well as seeing healthy saltmarsh and restored, recovering saltmarsh.

The saltmarsh walk went well today. The participants saw the new fencing in place on the seaward side of the saltmarsh that is taking some of the energy out of the waves, protecting the damaged saltmarsh. Next year’s plantings will also be protected while they establish, & once established those plants will go on to shelter the saltmarsh further, allowing it to extend more.

The Green Shores #FifeClimateFestival events continue next week with an open volunteering session at the polytunnel just outside of St Andrews to divide plants to get them ready for planting out at our saltmarsh restoration sites on the Tay and Eden Estuaries.

Many golf courses are on or close to estuaries and benefit from the protection from erosion that saltmarshes provide, including at St Andrews Links and at Royal Dornoch who support our saltmarsh restoration work.

It's always great to see points where the erosion of the salt marsh is starting to be reversed. This saltmarsh has been eroded previously but plants are now growing on the exposed faces, protecting them and helping the saltmarsh build again.
The height of the saltmarsh visible due to the erosion is a good indicator of how much sediment can be stored in a healthy saltmarsh.

Spotted some Sea Club Rush in a tiny saltmarsh fragment at Balmerino on the Tay river.
It's growing in very stony ground, unlike in our muddy planting sites.
