Good morning and happy Wednesday.
It's been a week already.
The Key Bridge collapse hit me emotionally in a way I did not expect. It's a huge physical landmark that has been a part of my life for my entire time living in the Baltimore area (i.e. since 2008). It was a huge part of my commute and even visiting family. And now it's just...gone.
I heard a friend online say it's like grieving the loss of a human member of the community and, while it feels weird, it's kind of apt.
Still feels surreal. Still praying for those who were harmed in the incident.
The scale of the problem is shown in this NTSB footage of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore.
The ship has had its starboard bow caved in, there are dozens of cargo containers in the water, the port is effectively closed until the bridge structure and ship have been removed, and a major highway for the North Eastern region has been cut.
Biden has sent human and material resources and promised that the Federal Government will pay for the bridge replacement (Congress willing). Trump, if you remember, threw rolls of paper towel at hurricane survivors and did nothing else. Republicans are already playing the tragedy for political points.

Two ship pilots were on board the large cargo vessel that hit Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge.
Here’s a Q&A with a veteran ship captain, now working for a maritime academy, describing the role these pilots play on boats and why what happened last night was "absolutely" every crew member's nightmare:

I kind of get where most of the people scoffing at the idea of the feds promising to pay for the #FrancisScottKeyBridge before talking about Maersk’s liability are coming from, but saying “we are going to take responsibility for fixing the problem” before any other considerations is exactly the right thing to do here.
Figuring out exactly what went wrong, who’s at fault, and to the tune of how much $$$ is going to take a while but cleanup and reconstruction has to start *now.*

At 01:24:30 the lights went out.
Right after that, the ship's course changed direction, heading towards the bridge.
It looks like the captain tried to change course when the lights and the engine regained power.
But 100,000 tons of mass has a lot of momentum.
Cargo ship from Singapore called Dali. Video shows a series of at least 2 power losses on the Dali ship just before crashing into the #FrancisScottKeyBridge #BridgeCollapse #Baltimore
LOL. Maria Bartiromo is a special kind of asshole.

Hmm, bunch of U.S. military ships are now bottled into Baltimore Harbor. #FrancisScottKeyBridge #bridge #disaster #Baltimore
i grew up in Baltimore and the video of this collapse is incomprehensible. the bridge was hit directly in one of its two supports by a massive cargo ship, and it was destroyed completely within seconds
my thoughts are with anyone on that bidge at the time, and who are now in the water (2 successful rescues so far)

The DALI, a container ship flagged by Singapore, is the ship that appears to have struck the bridge. https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/details/ships/shipid:2810451/mmsi:563004200/imo:9697428/vessel:DALI
Regarding the #Dali which hit the #FrancisScottKeyBridge in #baltimore early this morning: this guy is very reliable when it comes to anything shipping-related. He says it looks like the Dali experienced a power failure.
Good morning.
It is a somber Tuesday after the incident on the Francis Scott Key Bridge. That is my local commuter bridge and the one I took to work daily for over a decade before getting my current, local job.
My BIL / SIL take it still take it. I am thankful their commute did not line up with the incident. We called them both when we saw the news early this morning to check. I am also thankful for those who were able to be saved so far out of the harbor.
I pray that more folks who fell in are found and saved.

WJZ report the #FrancisScottKeyBridge had an AADT (daily traffic) of 31000. Sounds right, it’s a bypass and serves some of the southern suburbs and neighborhoods of Baltimore rather than a long distance through route.
