Wind & solar generation has scaled up remarkably across the United States, but a growing share of this electricity is going to waste. When the grid can’t absorb all the power produced—either due to aging transmission systems or a lack of local load—the surplus is “curtailed”, or essentially wasted

The Energy Mix · Data Centres Tap Into Wasted Renewable ElectricityBy Chris Bonasia

"To the naked eye the pollution is not visible."

Wonder Valley Update #2 takes a look at two op-eds supporting the project, provincial demands to dismantle environmental protections, and Elon Musk's xAI data centre fiasco - more behind-the-scenes information I couldn’t fit in the story for The Energy Mix.

#Nvidia is seeking to reduce its reliance on #BigTech companies by striking new partnerships to sell its artificial intelligence chips to nation states, corporate groups and challengers to groups such as #Microsoft, #Amazon and #Google.

This week, the #American chip giant announced a multibillion-dollar US chip deal with #SaudiArabia’s #Humain, while the #UnitedArabEmirates announced plans to build one of the world’s largest #DataCentres in co-ordination with the US government, as the #GulfStates plan to build massive #AI infrastructure.”

Demand for the #datacentres turns out not to be there. Around 80% are not actually in use. [MIT Technology Review]"

“He (#PeterDutton) cites #DataCentres in the US where those #tech companies are having conversations with nuclear power providers:

The beauty of an #investment like #nuclear into the #Hunter region for example is you can attract the data centres which is exactly what is happening in the US. #Apple and #Oracle and #Microsoft, or these #companies are willing to spend tens of billions of dollars but they are only having conversations with #NuclearPower providers.”

#DataCentres ... in ... SPAAAAAACE!!!!! is the most ridiculous news story so far this year. Even more ridiculous then #Trumponomics or #MichaelFabricant's glorious hair. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cjewvp If you need so much computering that you can't just use a small modern computer then you're going to need cooling for that. Cooling takes about 45% of the power budget for a DC on Earth, and is MUCH HARDER in a vacuum where you can't use the atmosphere or a river as a heat sink.

BBC NewsThe plans to put data centres into orbit and on the moonProponents say space-based data centres will be more secure, but sceptics say big hurdles remain.

#Amazon, #Microsoft and #Google are operating #datacentres that use vast amounts of water in some of the world’s driest areas and are building many more, the non-profit investigatory organisation #SourceMaterial and the Guardian have found.

With Donald Trump pledging to support them, the three #technology giants are planning hundreds of datacentres in the US and across the globe, with a potentially huge impact on populations already living with #water scarcity.

The Guardian · Revealed: Big tech’s new datacentres will take water from the world’s driest areasBy Luke Barratt

“The announcement follows the prime minister’s call for #tech companies to work alongside the government to build small modular reactors (#SMRs) to power energy intensive #AI #DataCentres across #Britain.

Speaking on Wednesday, Starmer vowed to “push past #nimbyism” and warned his new rural and suburban MPs that he would “break through” if there was resistance and use his party’s big majority to ensure there could be no #dissent.

The #PM said that he anticipated smaller #reactors could be built by 2032 and could become commonplace across Britain. He hinted the #government was keen to offer #consumers lower bills if they lived close to new #obtrusive nuclear construction.”

We’ll just plonk ‘em where we want
and everything will work 😅😂🤣🤣

I wish the fans and occasional users of #ChatGPT would read this, and try to understand that the whole thing is snake oil to trick us into burning the planet even faster than we are - so #gates and #balmer can buy a 10th yacht.

I don't want to die in a flood.
I don't want my kids to die in a mega fire.
I don't want my friends to die from heat stroke.

I don't want to live in a world where electricity is rationed to homes and hospitals because the #ai #datacentres suck up more juice than the region can produce.

I want clean water and a livable planet.
