Thanks for indirectly introducing me to #ButtonDown @WeirdWriter. For those who (like me) aren't familiar with it, it's an email newsletter engine, akin to Ghost, who I see are also working on ActivityPub integration. So we'll be able to follow ButtonDown newsletters with our fediverse accounts, and comment on posts;

The Verge · Newsletter platform Ghost adopts ActivityPub to ‘bring back the open web’By Nilay Patel

thanks to @amministratore for pointing this out and sadly no simple way to QT:

"#Ghost says it’s working with #Mastodon and #Buttondown, another newsletter platform,on #ActivityPub support. The company also says it will be working to improve its reading experience as it prepares to let people follow other fediverse authors on its platform. Importantly, the project also says that #paidcontent “should work fine” with ActivityPub as well—something no other platform has really tried yet."

So I think the migration of my Doctor's Note newsletter #substack to #Buttondown is complete. Thanks to Justin from @buttondown for adding in redirects from the Substack URL slugs so that old links and searches go to the right place (and fixing up the image CSS). Here it is at its new home: newsletter.polaine.com

(Sidenote: the best thing I did was to use a custom domain on Substack just in case I ever had to do this. All the content now lives at the same URLs from before)

newsletter.polaine.comDoctor's NoteIf you mixed together things I’m thinking about with blogging, bookmarking, Twitter, Mastodon and e-mails I write to friends and colleagues who ask me if I have any thoughts on a subject, you’d have Doctor’s Note. Doctor’s Note is an irregular newsletter containing a mix of longer form essays and short musing on design, design leadership, coaching, innovation, culture, technology, society, personal and professional development. Some essays appear at a later date on my blog, while the book recommendations, links with commentary and other articles are exclusive to subscribers. Why “Doctor’s Note”? Because it’s about the only time I get to make use of the fact I have a PhD and I liked the pun. You get to take time off of work or school when you have a doctor’s note, so make use of it. Subscribe to get full access to the newsletter and website. Never miss an update – every new edition of the newsletter goes directly to your inbox.
Continued thread

To celebrate the launch I published two posts to my #personalblog.

"Welcome to my Tiny Home on the Internet" (philipptemmel.com/writings/tin ) is the story about my journey of building my #personalwebsite.

Inspired by @robb + the #HemisphericViews podcast, I gathered my #AppDefaults in another post (philipptemmel.com/writings/app).

I also set up a newsletter on #buttondown called Datest (buttondown.email/philipp) which I will write casually to share updates about my site, writings, and interesting links.

www.philipptemmel.comMy Tiny Home on the internet · Philipp TemmelThe story behind my personal website, the inspiration and driving forces that pushed me forward, and how I built my tiny home on the internet.

As I move instances today, I figure it's time for another #Introduction. I am the only Orthodox #Jewish #transgender #film critic that I know of. That said, I do cover #TV to some extent. I am a member of various awards-voting critics groups.

In addition to my love of #movies, I am also a #baseball fan and write about baseball at Dugout Dirt (which will remain on #Substack until my #Buttondown newsletter brings in enough paid subscription revenue to justify a move). The #StLCards are my favorite baseball team and when it comes to college #sports, it's all about the #KentuckyWildcats aka #BBN. I root for the #Boston #Celtics when it comes to the #NBA even as many ex-Cats are playing throughout the league.

Another thing: I am very vocal when it comes to speaking out against #antisemitism no matter where it comes from.

Audrey Watters, now using #Ghost (and with a shout out to #buttondown)

"...my work, at Second Breakfast and elsewhere, aims to help us think through how and why we got here and to examine where the tech industry wants to take us – how it wants to engineer our bodies and our brains. For me, for all of us, I think it’s going to be better (and safer) to talk about this somewhere other than Substack."

Second Breakfast · Leaving Substack (Again)This isn’t how I planned to end 2023 or start 2024. It’s not, to borrow from a grade school assignment, how I wanted to “spend my Christmas vacation.” But the owners of Substack have forced my hand with their open support for hate speech on the platform; so

Can't get a #Beehiiv account because they prohibit sexual content.

Wrote to #Buttondown and #Ghost to learn what their standards are. However, they both use #Stripe, who has suspended me for adult content.

It's so much harder to talk about sexual fantasy than it is to decry certain skin colors and genders as not human. Even those comments on #Substack's announcement were alternately "eww, porn is gross" and "hang on, let's see what the Nazis have to say."
