Według serwisu The Information, Apple w ostatnich latach rozważało stworzenie własnej usługi chmurowej, konkurencyjnej dla Amazon Web Services (AWS).
Rozmowy na ten temat trwały jeszcze w pierwszej połowie 2024 roku, choć nie wiadomo, czy są kontynuowane.
Nowa usługa Apple miałaby oferować wynajem serwerów opartych na chipach z serii M, znanych z komputerów Mac. Taka chmura umożliwiłaby twórcom aplikacji uruchamianie funkcji online bez konieczności posiadania własnych serwerów.
Apple wierzy, że wydajność energetyczna chipów M mogłaby przełożyć się na niższe koszty operacyjne dla deweloperów – nawet w porównaniu z AWS. Firma sama już korzysta z takiej infrastruktury wewnętrznie, m.in. dla usług Apple Music czy Apple Wallet.
Choć projekt mógłby działać pod marką iCloud, jego głównym celem byłoby zwiększenie przychodów z usług Apple. Pomysł wspierał m.in. Michael Abbott, który opuścił firmę w 2023 roku.
