Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>Portuguese believe that not only access to culture and art should be universal and free but that censorship never works :)</p><p>"With more than 3,000 blocked domain names, Portugal has strict anti-piracy measures in place. However, data from piracy tracking firm MUSO, prepared for last week’s meeting, shows that piracy remains popular in Portugal, even by European standards.</p><p>“Portugal’s piracy rate per user is 33% higher than the European average, marking it as one of the most active territories for unauthorised content consumption,” MUSO explains.</p><p>The higher piracy rates are also reflected in the number of visits to pirate sites by Internet users. These visit numbers are higher than in any other country in the region, despite the existing blocking measures.</p><p>“This pattern of high engagement has remained consistent across several years, indicating a need for ongoing and more refined enforcement strategies,” MUSO writes, aligning with the call for stronger enforcement."</p><p><a href="https://torrentfreak.com/portugal-remains-a-piracy-hotspot-despite-blocking-thousands-of-sites/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">torrentfreak.com/portugal-rema</span><span class="invisible">ins-a-piracy-hotspot-despite-blocking-thousands-of-sites/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Portugal" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Portugal</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Piracy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Piracy</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Censorship" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Censorship</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Copyright" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Copyright</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/IP" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>IP</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/SiteBlocking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SiteBlocking</span></a></p>

in short, when Government agencies insist a DNS provider block (or worse poison) the resolver for a given pirate site, companies have responded in different ways

OpenDNS = Would rather stop serving an entire country than capitulate

Cloudflare = Blocks the IP but gives an explicit error message stating that it is being forced to do so.

Google DNS = Complete & total submission, DNS won't resolve, leaves customers in the dark.

torrentfreak.comDNS Piracy Blocking Orders: Google, Cloudflare, and OpenDNS Respond Differently * TorrentFreakFacing escalating DNS piracy blocking orders, major providers like OpenDNS, Cloudflare, and Google are adopting notably different responses.

"More than a decade ago, Congress tried to pass SOPA and PIPA—two sweeping bills that would have allowed the government and copyright holders to quickly shut down entire websites based on allegations of piracy. The backlash was immediate and massive. Internet users, free speech advocates, and tech companies flooded lawmakers with protests, culminating in an “Internet Blackout” on January 18, 2012. Turns out, Americans don’t like government-run internet blacklists. The bills were ultimately shelved.

Thirteen years later, as institutional memory fades and appetite for opposition wanes, members of Congress in both parties are ready to try this again.

The Foreign Anti-Digital Piracy Act (FADPA), along with at least one other bill still in draft form, would revive this reckless strategy. These new proposals would let rights holders get federal court orders forcing ISPs and DNS providers to block entire websites based on accusations of infringing copyright. Lawmakers claim they’re targeting “pirate” sites—but what they’re really doing is building an internet kill switch.

These bills are an unequivocal and serious threat to a free and open internet. EFF and our supporters are going to fight back against them."

CloudFlare has enabled Encrypted Client Hello (ECH) for all free plans. The new privacy feature makes it impossible for Internet providers to track which websites subscribers visit. As a result, it also renders pirate site-blocking efforts useless, if both the site and the visitor have ECH enabled.

Breaking: Rogers just got a court order requiring all major ISPs in Canada to block unlicensed streams of Major League Baseball broadcasts. This is the third site blocking order like this, after NHL and FIFA (men only though).

This order requires Innocent third party ISPs to filter their customer's Internet traffic to protect Rogers' and TVA's investments in baseball broadcasts.

I'll post a link to the full order when it's online, maybe tomorrow.
