Today's #SciArtSeptember prompt is "Chaos". I decided to take inspiration from a cool math thing: the "Chaos Game".

Rather than attempt precise drawing, I wanted a more organic feel....with just a hint of the underlying structure. The triangles didn't come out, but the resulting pattern turned out interesting.

I’m not sure if today’s #SciArtSeptember prompt of “happily ever after” is a thing that happens in the real world but I thought of the great mathematician, writer and polymath, Mary Fairfax Somerville (1780-1872). Arguably the best thing that ever happened to her was when she became a young widowed mother. Her first marriage to Lieutenant Samuel Greig had not been happy; he did not think much of women’s intellectual capacity. 🧵1/n

When #physicist Lise Meitner (1878-1968) explained #nuclear #fission she understood nothing was “lost” (today’s #SciArtSeptember prompt) despite the missing mass after the reaction. She worked with chemists Hahn & Straßmann in 30s Berlin, investigating elements beyond uranium. They found bombarding nuclei of U-235 with neutrons actually triggered it to fission, or break, into 2 nuclei of roughly half the size & some free neutrons! 🧵1/n

For #SciArtSeptember: 50 EPG neurons from the #Drosophila, segmented from electron microscopy images, rendered in #Blender3d driven by neuVid. This ring of neurons forms part of the fly’s internal compass. As the fly changes its heading, neuronal activity moves around the ring, as shown by the false color gradient. Imaging and reconstruction by #HHMIJanelia and Google Research (www.janelia.org/project-team/flyem/hemibrain); function described by Hulse et al (doi.org/10.7554/eLife.66039).

For the #SciArtSeptember prompt hidden: #astronomer Vera Rubin (neé Cooper, ‘28-‘16) & her discovery that angular motion of galaxies deviates from predictions, 1st evidence for dark matter, now known as 5x as common as matter & the stuff which dictates dynamics of galaxies & evolution of our universe! The Nobel committee waited 3 years after she died to reward another for the theory of dark matter.

Today's #SciArtSeptember prompt is "Microscopic", which doesn't really give me any ideas because it's too big of a subject and I'm usually drawing microscopic structures and patterns. So I decided to play with microscopic Radiolaria in today's drawing.

I tried using circle templates, to help with getting the circles more perfect. Hmmm...I think I like free-hand circles better. But it was good to try it.

For #sciartSeptember prompt royal: Queen Seondeok of Silla (c. 595 ~ 610 - 647), 27th ruler of 1 of the Three Kingdoms of Korea, from 632-647, who brought about a renaissance in culture & science & built the Cheomseongdae moon & star-gazing observatory.

Known for her intelligence, wisdom & benevolence, stories survive of her curiosity & cleverness even as a child. When her father the King was gifted peony seeds 🧵1/n
