I was looking into how a Bluesky PDS works from a programming point-of-view.

I came across this document the first time I looked around. (And then someone shared it with me again.)

It gives you an overview, but not a list of API (NSID) end-points to implement.

The only resource I could find for that is this:

The weakness of #ATProto isn’t at the instance level.

In fact, running an AT protocol “instance”—or rather, a #PDS—could actually be more affordable than running an #ActivityPub-enabled service. This is because a PDS is decoupled from relays and the firehose, whereas #Mastodon or #Pixelfed servers, for example, are not.

There are benefits and drawbacks to both approaches. To put it succinctly, #Bluesky is based on microservices, whereas Mastodon relies on macroservices.

Personally, I prefer the macroservice approach because I like my server to handle most of what I need it to do.

@eblu True, but the additional problem with #Bluesky is that the #PDS is decoupled from the firehose.

In reality, it’s unlikely anyone will run a firehouse without lots of investment capital.

Whereas, right here on my server, I’m connected to almost every node on the Fediverse—with the exception of those I deliberately defederated.
