"Understanding #Bluesky’s architecture clarifies how this happened. Built on the #ATproto Protocol developed since 2019, the system uses #PDS nodes (Personal Data Servers), Relays (servers that gather and distribute data), and AppViews (which render the user interface).

Critically, while anyone can run their own PDS for greater control, doing so requires technical effort and resources. As a result, the vast majority access Bluesky through the official app."

I was looking into how a Bluesky PDS works from a programming point-of-view.

I came across this document the first time I looked around. (And then someone shared it with me again.)

github.com/bluesky-social/atpr

It gives you an overview, but not a list of API (NSID) end-points to implement.

The only resource I could find for that is this:

github.com/blacksky-algorithms

(You can infer it from the directory names and file names.)

GitHubWhat does a PDS implementation entail? · bluesky-social atproto · Discussion #2350This is an informal overview of what a PDS does and what a "full" implementation covers. A few folks are working on independent PDS implementations, either as earnest real-world infrastructure, or ...

What I'd really like to see is BlueSky modifying their AT protocol to allow AT relays to treat ActivityPub servers as Personal Data Servers. Maybe by using aspects of the Solid protocol, as demonstrated by @activitypods?

activitypods.org/

No idea if this is technically viable, I'm just thinking out loud here. But just imagine unifying the efforts of AP, Solid and AT developer ...

ActivityPodsActivityPods - Personal data spaces powered with ActivityPubBrings together ActivityPub and Solid Pods and empowers developers to create truly decentralized applications.

The weakness of #ATProto isn’t at the instance level.

In fact, running an AT protocol “instance”—or rather, a #PDS—could actually be more affordable than running an #ActivityPub-enabled service. This is because a PDS is decoupled from relays and the firehose, whereas #Mastodon or #Pixelfed servers, for example, are not.

There are benefits and drawbacks to both approaches. To put it succinctly, #Bluesky is based on microservices, whereas Mastodon relies on macroservices.

Personally, I prefer the macroservice approach because I like my server to handle most of what I need it to do.

genomic.socialEpicBear (@EpicBear@genomic.social)I think this post is quite telling, so you need massive financial backing in order to set up a relay for a 2nd Bluesky instance. With great money comes great incentives to do bad things. The point here is, why should a user potentially go through the same busted experience they had with Twitter on a potentially busted 2nd Bluesky instance? With #ActivityPub, you can simply find another instance, #Mastodon doesn't disappear when one instance goes busted. https://mastodon.social/@elipariser/113906451145161241

@eblu True, but the additional problem with #Bluesky is that the #PDS is decoupled from the firehose.

In reality, it’s unlikely anyone will run a firehouse without lots of investment capital.

Whereas, right here on my server, I’m connected to almost every node on the Fediverse—with the exception of those I deliberately defederated.

Заблудиться в 3х соснах (ошибках) между page 404, too many redirects и Handle Invalid - это прям новый вид удовольствия.

From NWS Los Angeles:

Particularly Dangerous Situation Red Flag Warning conditions are very likely Monday night through Tuesday for much of the Santa Ana wind corridor of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties. This event has the potential to be as strong as the November 5th-6th Santa Ana event that led to the Mountain Fire. Prepare for fire weather by ensuring you have defensible space and creating a plan in case of evacuation.
