My ASUS router doesn't make me feel warm and fuzzy about my network's security, so I'm finally doing something about it. My options are OpenWRT and pfSense/OPNsense. It's surprisingly hard to find mini-PCs with two network interfaces, and finding a PCI card that fits into it is a hassle. Besides, it's much cheaper to buy a router with WAN, WiFi and Ethernet all rolled into a single device and flash it with OpenWRT. Sadly, my current router isn't compatible, but ...
#openwrt #homelab

Also der Normalfall. 🙄

For the first time ever I flashed #OpenWrt on to an old #Netgear Orbi router that would have otherwise went to the dumpster. In fact, this thing is running way smoother now than it ever was on the awful OEM software.

After installing this at my favourite café in the neighbourhood I'll just ask the owners to donate a couple of € to the project.

✅ less e-waste
✅ happy humans in the cafe
✅ free coffee for me :)

@arstechnica "To remove the backdoor, infected users should remove the key and the port setting."

Or should maybe flash the device with an #OpenWrt firmware, if available? That should be the best way to get rid of the backdoor. If someone has SSH/root access then they could also hide that key in the web UI...
